Opinions of my steer?

These pictures were taken March 28, I don't have any recent pictures of him, he was about 800 then. I will get some pictures of him tonight to put on here.
Let me know what you think he needs and how he's doing, I know the pictures are hard to tell much of anything from and they don't do him much justice.

He's also a lot cleaner now, that was back when it was raining a lot

He looked real green back then, I would have poured the feed to him and hoped the gut filled in and the flank dropped. From the front shot it appears that he has some frame to grow into, I do not know if it is the picture but he looks to slope a bit from hooks to pins, other than that it looks like if he feeds well he could make a nice fat steer.
I think he could supprise you if all the parts come together.

I'd say he needs to drop in the flank and just power up, did he keep his hair?

I can see the diamond in the ruff - but just barely. If he kept his hair he will do fine.

The steer has all the parts and pieces to be good just that the flank can drop and more rib and gut shape. I think he will do good down the road just pour the feed and work that hair!!

Personally, I hope he shucked all his hair right after these pictures, and you've poured the feed to him and have worked his hair a lot.  If he kept his hair, his coat will be extremely rough by now.

What is the age on the steer as of March? Will he be show county fair market steer? I do not know your feed ration or your target end date. But if you have a fair in the summer months you are going to have to push him to make weight. If he has been on a grower ration which by the looks of him he has, you may want to put him on a fatter ration. All the hay he wants to eat will help that belly come down.

When is your end date? Knowing that would help a bunch.

Thanks everyone, I think he was born in February or March, so hes around 13-16 months now, I don't know if that sounds about right..this is only my second steer lol. He weighed 1,000 May 27th.
He is getting a mix of Payback's Kountry Buffet and Sweet Mix Plus with some medicated salt and about 8oz of High Octane and all the hay he can eat. He had another steer with him up until a couple weeks ago when it got butchered.

Also, he did have some health problems a few weeks ago so he wasn't on his full amount of feed, and he still isn't..so I'm hoping to get to push him but I have to be real careful.

And Fair is August 7th.

I KNOW HIS FEET AREN'T SQUARE AND THAT WOULD MAKE HIS BUTT LOOK A LOT BETTER.

He needs some body on him, i would get him on a good grain hay as you try to work him back to full feed. Worm him as mentioned, and but him on some stabilized rice bran, it will help him put some cover on. He needs to be on a finisher, more fat less protien.

If you can get him to get some body to go with his muscle he should be fine.

He was wormed last month.
Like I said, he was sick. He foundered. and it's hard to mix to much feed, so i'm not really sure how to go about that.

You will need to probably try a different path to get some weight on him, we had a calf with a bad gut before we tried this.
We have what they call Oat-Mo out here, it is  a chopped oat hay with molasses. It is commonly fed to horses, we have used it when a calf was off on his feed.
I would see if they have it in your area, if they do, i would feed him that and add some, barley/corn Stabilized Rice Bran and Calf-manna.
I would start at 6 pounds Oat-mo, twice a day, for a couple of days and then start adding the grain and supplements slowly. Should take a week or two to get him on track.
I would work him up to about 6 pounds oat-mo, 4 pounds barley/corn, one pound Stabilized Rice Bran, and one pound Calf- Manna, mix it all together, feed twice a day. Should be easier on him and still put some weight on him.
I would also give him full access to all the grain hay he wanted 24 hours a day. I have seen calves gain 2 pounds a day on grain hay alone.
What ever you decide to do, good luck, and hope he comes around.

I agree with VC on the grain, but if his flank don't drop close to show, I would use some depth charge, beat pulp or other product to fill out his gut that you like at the show. That will help hide some of the flank and I would be sure to stagger his rear legs a little as that will help hide some also as when his rear legs are across from each other the lack of the flank really sticks out. Is your show a slick show or not cause it appears that he lost his hair quality which would also help cover up his flawed areas.
