Opinions on my Son's MaineX steer

Hi, check out my son's 1st steer.  We are very proud of the work he has put in this calf.  The steer is a Maine /  Angus Cross with Lifeline breeding on Sire's side.  He will show him at the end of this month.  Let me know what you think of him.

Congratulations on getting through your first year doing a steer project. It's always exciting when your kids are enthused about a project and put their heart and soul into it. I don't know what your county show is like. Our is extremely competitive and the steers in order to compete have to look clubby.
Our first year was an accomplishment just to get through it and we were lucky enough to make the auction. If you continue you will learn a lot and excel with the quality and expectations of the animals and the program.

We have an extremely small show on the local level......only 10 steers.  They have to be slick sheared for the show, and the two prior pre-shows we have already had.  The breeder our steer came from has had three grand champion steers at our show the last 5 years,  and last years grand champion heifer.  We are hoping he will do well.  What do you mean by "clubby"?

''Clubby'' means having the appearance of a club calf( FFA/4-H show steer)....which can be described as big boned, stout, thick, square in a smooth and sound complete package. Oh and really hairy too.

Very nice first steer,

We have several people in our county who are trying to get our show to go to slick sheared. I have mixed feelings. We don't mind it too much because we show throughout the year and our steers are finished by the time they get to fair. However there are a lot of people at fair who's steers are not finished. Obviously if they are slick sheared, ribs and defects etc will be much more noticeable.
We usually tag about 35 to 40 steers and most everyone makes auction. The folks that buy have to send the steer to be processed immediately. It would be nice if we had an option where they could go home either with the 4-H member or the buyer to be fed out if they need it. I think the quality of the meat we are trying to sell would be much higher.
I've attached a picture of a clubbier looking bull that we raised. The definition TKshow2win gave you is accurate.
Let us know how your son does at fair. :O)
