I like him. It looks like he has a lot of bone and hair. Along with being pretty wide. The only thing I would change about him is I would give him a little more flex in his front pasterns.
If you take him to the Expo he needs a good clip job, but you already know that. He looks like he could be a pretty good calf. He could stand a little more rear flank. I'd consider feeding him a decent amount of beet pulp leading up to your shows, just be sure to get him fat.
I'm not going to lie, I've pumped calves before (we used 7-up or sprite because of the carbonation), but I no longer like doing it. If you feed dry beet pulp & manage them right, you should be able to get them to drink without pumping. Some shows don't allow pumping, so check the rules before attending a show.
BTW, you can train them to drink sprite or 7-up too.
I'll give that a try some time. I can just imagine the looks I'll get from dad when I do though. He all ready thinks I'm an idiot from some of the other things I tried. (lol)
Add a little to the water & then start adding a little more. The calf will develop a taste for it & the carbonation will fill them better than plain water. It'll help. Kinda expensive is the only thing. Buy 2 liter bottles.
CM... I'm not a clipping pro, but I like you & I want to be helpful... IDK who clipped that calf in the that Nov pic (I'm thinking that you bought it clipped), but, notice how looking down his top that he dips behind his hooks/jump muscle back to his tailhead? That is a BIG pet peave of mine & it makes them look like they droop hooks to pins worse than they really do. "Loining them" helps, but I like it to look good before you "loin them". Leave some hair & make that area look a little "more level". You can veer up slightly, especially at the tail head (all calves are different), but don't go below the rest of topline anywhere in that area.
I think when he's clipped, I think he'll look pretty good.
Hey CM, if you decide to take him to Expo and want or would like some help clipping on him, let me know. I'll be down there most of the day Saturday and of course showing on Sunday. I think he is a pretty good steer under all that fuzz.
I agree along with TJ. Don't like how they clipped the top. In the last pic it almost looks like he is a little sickle hocked but it is probably how he is standing. I also noticed in the last pic that he has a nice front end. (clapping)
Thanks everyone. He was allready clipped when I bought him. I just found out today that I can't take him to the expo, my ride bailed. But I am coming on sat. I hope to see some of you there!
