Our new Shorthorn Herd Sire JTM Spartan 517E

Here is a photo of our yearling herd sire JTM Spartan 517E. We are very excited about this GS&J Captain Rob 3x son. He is out of a really awesome moderate cow with a great udder, A&T Sylvia Blossom 152.

I like him.  More people need to raise their own herd bulls.  I expect he moves well and is out breeding cows at a young age.  What kind of grass is that?  It looks lush, but his pedigree and EPD's would predict that he can work on grass as a yearling and get the job done.  Where I come from, JTM, you would be called a "flat-lander" and you must know what you are doing to make a living raising cattle on prime farmland like that--it reminds me of Gary Kaper AKA r.n.reed.

I like the slick coat and cherry-red colour, and, compared to my cattle, the growth for age. Unless I feed my bulls, they would never look like that at a year and I can only use them at two years of age!
It will be interesting to see how his REA and Fat EPD's change as the scan and kill data comes in as I see his dam and sire are on the opposite sides of the scale for these two traits.

Haha, yes this is grain country. We have three different farms that we have cattle on that are rolling hills. The pasture to the west behind the photo I don't own and is prime ground and my property is on the edge of the valley so it is much less valuable. We have converted lower value crop ground into pasture but yes you are correct that we have some good pasture right now. A lot has to do with our rotational grazing and intensive management. This pasture has a mix of orchard grass, rye grass, blue grass, timothy, white clover, and red clover. It's been a good year but it usually gets thin in this area in the summer. Thanks for the compliment on the bull also.

Thanks! He was fed but wasn't fed very much as you can see from his ultrasound data and his fat numbers. He has really taken off since we put him out on pasture a few weeks ago. We are really starting to realize what a gem we have here. I really do believe that the combination of the sire and dam is going to work well. GS&J Captain Rob 3X has shown tremendous ability to pass on marbling to his offspring and we also believe from talking to A&T that his ribeye is much better than what the EPD is currently showing. So with time and more data this bull could be very interesting. Spartan's BW was 85 lbs. this year on a high BW year for us. So it was an "o.k." BW but we do have a full sib to him that will be available that was born with only a 76 lb. BW!

The bull looks great. Congrats jtm on your breeding program. Most people may not know that you also bred the dam of the Angus bull slider. His acceptance has been phenomenal.  There is a great need for commercial breeders in the show cattle industry. The real world business is often missing from the showing.  Congrats on your success on breeding quality cattle no matter what the breed. Thanks dave.

I like the bull and I like the pedigree. The RS influence really shows in him, as is generally the case w/ the prepotent linebred genetics. Spartan, carrying 3-4 shots of titleist 269, is gonna bring quite a bit of angularity/maternal femininity to the mix. I think he'll cross nicely with your Renegade daughters.
