Overdue Solution heifer

We have a CF Solution first calf heifer that is last in the group to calve. We don’t run a cleanup bull and no neighbors with cattle so we are very sure of her due date. We have had cows go over before but not a week and not on a first calf heifer. Our vet will give us the shots to induce if we want but I’m not the biggest fan of it. She is bred to Mav Bellringer. Has a nice size udder. I guess what I’m concerned about is how big the calf will be. She’s only been on pasture and hay. No grain. Thoughts on inducing or let her go? She’s a CF Solution x JTM Athena 930b. Thanks for the input.

Given her breeding I would definetly induce-And have a vet handy in case you need to do a c section I actually had an athena related to the JTM female and Solution can be a real train wreck if you get a big one Bellringer is a good bull but there are also some big ones in the woodpile in his background-O0

+1 on this. I used to have a pair of Creole cows who consistently went 2-3 weeks past their due dates and the calves were never under 100lbs. We had a crazy number of C Sections and prolapses with those genetics.. make sure she's induced to calve during regular veterinary hours because I'd be shocked if she had a normal sized calf.

Induced yesterday morning and she calved a good size heifer tonight. Thank you for the inducing advice, it all worked out. We do run a few creole bred cattle and never have a problem. One of them is a double bred creole ( charisma x creole) and she calves right on time and unassisted every year so far. We do show shorthorns so sometimes there is bigger bw on the calves. Our Bellringers this year all have come small and unassisted so I will blame this on the cows pedigree. Thanks again.

Which Creole bull and what was on the bottom side of the cows?

The cows went back to 9590 and I had it happen with a first calf heifer bred to 135 where we ended up having to cut the calf out and it took 2 of us to lift him--didn't own a scale at the time but he was bigger than the 2 other calves we had that the weight tape said were 110-120lbs. Cow sides were Homedale Blizzard 820 x HF Rimpro 6601 and Homedale Blizzard 820 x Homedale Dynamic

I would have also induced her but I will say that her birth was more than likely when she would have calved without the induction. Most induced cattle will calve 48 to 72 hours after being induced.

I for one am just glad they are doing well Alot of the people who have been around long enough have seen many versions of this-Sometimes it did not end well You can breed that BW out of the line starting with this baby and maybe create some very good cattle-Same with her mother-AND YOU CAN DO IT WITH SHORTHORNS-NOT some throw away Angus calf Not all black calves out of horns are bad but Ive had my share that just didnt knick O0

We definitely try to stay away from angus and use calving ease type shorthorns. Haven’t had too much trouble yet. Dug up a pic of one of our creole cows calves from last month. He was 80lb and came super easy. He is a JDMC Big Sky 15x on a charisma (creole) x creole cow. We’ll watch this one grow. He might be sticking around. Triple clean by pedigree.

I've visited a number of long-time cattle breeders and a common theme I picked up from them is you can tell more about a bull's potential when he's a newborn than when he's a yearling.

the opposite end of the spectrum would be awesome looking puds that don't grow, don't have milk, etc., that many have crowned the next best thing. sometimes, the great ones are crowned that are crippled, have forward slipping pasterns.


We've all heard about the experts, padding when they are right, but not saying anything about what ends up in the wood pile they thought were great.


rarely will you hear stories of how one thought that so and so was great but that they were wrong about it.

Where would you like me to start with bulls I thought were going to be game changers and just turned out mediocre or worse. I put two yearling bulls in this year to help clean up the commercial cows and the one I really really liked got his ass kicked and limped around the rest of the summer. I had high hopes for him.

I want to clarify I’m not claiming to have a game changer or some promo bull. We’ll see how he grows and he might keep his nuts a little longer if I like him enough. My family enjoys showing cattle and that’s what we are trying to raise. We picked this heifer out of our pasture last fall and she’s been super fun to watch grow too. Thats a nice pedigree considering show lines I think the push towards cattle that cannot be trusted in any commercial sense needs to begin with Show Ring picks and with emphasis on BWS and doability by pedigree if nothing else-probably closest you will get But the so called leaders of the assoc dont have the guts I did admire Sullivans efforts there with Red Rewards Hot Commodities Lauer cattle etc in the mix to breed some of that out but the new round of Solution and Aviator infusions more or less nullfies it JMO-They sell show cattle its what they have to do to continue I am guessing that the black cattle they are getting into more and more are probably more predictable Id like to see you take that Solution and breed some stoutness and Calving Ease into her background Tough combo tho O0
