COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSAZ & AP) -- Police say it was 70-year-old grandma from Ironton who shot and killed a man who was attempting to rob her and other family members in their Columbus, Ohio motel room.
Police are not releasing the woman’s name.
The woman and other family members were in Columbus for a horse show and were in the motel Wednesday night when police say a man with a gun barged through the door, which was open slightly.
The woman’s 51-year-old son, who also does not want to be identified, says the gunman demanded everyone’s money and jewelry.
The son says when the gunman ordered everyone to the floor; his mom grabbed her purse, pulled out her 357 handgun, came back over the bed and fired.
Police say 25-year-old Wayne Winston died after staggering to the parking lot.
The son also says his mom is saddened having to shoot and kill someone.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that the woman had a permit to carry a concealed weapon and that gun belonged to her late husband.
Police say no charges have been filed against the woman, but they expect the case will be presented to a grand jury.
