Call me chicken but  I'm having a  hard  time getting myself to start clipping on my heifers neck. I've always been a summer showman an  the neck has always been  a  breeze but this winter I have never touched so  much hair before. Do  I just peel her neck down like normal?m

It takes LOTS of patients.  From your heifer and you both.  Don't get in any hurry.  If you can only do a little bit at a time that's fine, come back and do a little more later.  You can't put it back on there once you have cut it off, not in any short amount of time anyways.

I agree, patience and practice. Work slowly and evenly. Practice is the best resource you can have (well money doesnt hurt either) <cowboy>

First I am  no master clipper but, good thing you have the hair to worry about. The best way to start with the neck is to take alittle at a time. As the others said you can't put it back once its gone. Better to take to little than too much. They make a 5/8's blade but I can't use it. So I just started and took alot of time taking the neck done. We clip on regular basis in the winter to keep the hair in shape and it usually stimulates growth. I would trim the head like normal and then start to work on blending the neck into the body like you normally would. not sure if that helps at all.

I guess what Im wondering is do you still take the hair down pretty short. I mean closer to the head not down were you blend into the shoulders. You still want to take areas like your top line and such down pretty tight right? and then blend out from there? Lol I feel so silly being scared of all this hair  :)

Just depends on the animal. I peel the heads all short. We blend the hair along the jaw line and the top of the head. If the calf looks better with the top clipped tight then clip tight but,a it is nice when you have the advantage of having extra hair. Sometimes in the winter we have to tip the hair because its so long.  You may have to trim the hair on the body so its not extreme. Again I am not professional at all. I do OK. I am thinking some of the more experienced folks will jump in here. It takes me forever to clip.

I always try to clip the shoulder pretty tight and leave the hair in front of the shoulder in the crease longer to blend the shoulder into the neck. Then from there start clipping shorter and shorter as I make my way the head so the neck blends into the head.
