I just got my red angus journal and it appears they are concerned about the genetic defect osteopetrosis. Apparently they have two confirmed bulls as carriers.I guess it has been documented as being in Herford,Simmental, red and black angus and holsteins. So here is a defect in 4 different breeds. I wonder what breed it started in. It has been documented since the 1960's. Sounds like another mystery to solve. Are simmental related to holsteins? When did becton start the red angus herd? What breeds showed it in 1960? Could it have been transfered from holstein to black angus to red angus to simmentals and then the herfords? ;D

Auugh....just great...now I have to worry about durham red potential problems with some new deal. It possibly could deal with some popular lines in the Red Angus breed.

was that calf so big because of the pha

the way I understand it is that as the calf develops, it retains fluid and grows extremly large

It will only happen when you mate two carriers. Management, management, management! If I were a purebred breeder it wouldn't even be an issue. As a terminal show calf breeder you just have to manage.
