We have a Point Taken calf who has its tongue out of his mouth most of the time. Does this mean he has monkey mouth?

I don't think he has an underbite, he just sticks his tongue out about an inch of a half. Hopefully it will correct itself.

LOL OH Breeder.
If you have a monkey mouth calf it will appear as if it ran into a wall. You can basically grab the calf, open it's mouth and check to see if it has an underbite and how severe it is. I wouldn't think sticking the tongue out has anything to do with monkey mouth unless someone with a lot of experience with monkey mouth said so.

Point Taken has been known to throw a few with Monkey Mouth. We had one that had his tongue sticking out until the end.

OH Breeder's photo would be monkey mouth on a person.  With cattle, their lower jaw is the right length, but their upper jaw/nose is too short.  Looks like their face got smashed.  Also, the head on the one we had last year was wider than it should have been -- everything on her head except the lower jaw looked kind of dwarfy with this heifer.  In looking at her pedigree, she had Powerplant on both sides about 4 generations back.  Was surprised it carried through that far.

Another way to look at it- severe cases they remind you of a bulldog. Some people will call it bulldog head. The proper name is Prognathism.  Pretty much described as above. Lower jaw protrudes beyond the upper palate and the nasal bones and head may be shortened.

Doesn't look to be monkey mouth. But I'm not an expert. Is his tongue swollen or anything? Maybe check his mouth to look for abscesses, etc. Or maybe he just does it.

Will Monkey Mouth calves make it to slaughter?  I have one that fits the description to a T. It doesn't seem to be a problem at 60 days but I have not put her into the chute to look close.

As long as they can bite and chew they will do OK.  Hard to bite short grass if bottom teeth don't touch the pad on top.

Nck21 can you give us a shot of the calf from the side view with the calf's head point strait ahead? It is usually way easier to see from the side. Calf looks pretty much normal from the front, but that is usually the case. For some that don't know, Parout Mouth is when the top jaw over extends the bottom jaw.

Here's a side picture of him. Doesn't look like he has monkey mouth, just hope that tongue corrects itself.

If he does have it, it is not noticable from to pictures and my guess is that he may. Just a guess. I don't think that it will hurt this one any.JMO. I have seen some pretty stout Point Taken's.
