"He is our first (in the best sense of the word) aristocratic president," said author and journalist Malcolm Gladwell. "Bush was a buddy. Clinton was the kindly uncle. Obama is a prince."

And yet, Obama is also a writer, and writers were not at a loss for words. Author Ron Carlson was watching the president's syntax. "What courage," he said, "to use a complex sentence talking to a million people! By expecting the best of us, he just might get it."

Nonfiction writer Mark Kurlansky said the speech "was the most sophisticated view of the world and our role in it of any inaugural address in history."

you have got to be kidding me.  the sooner this fool and statesim fails the better.  the press has NO courage.  they are so up the toilet they are dripping from their toes.

what courage, he used a complete sentence.  what praise will be next?  11 rolls.  i'm gonna need 12 and counting.

Not to change the subject, but to all the people who think Bush didn't do any thing right, he dang sure did by pardoning those border patrols yesterday for killing that illegal.  That whole deal was b.s. and is what's wrong with this country.  Dusty, heres one to George W.  Those guys didn't deserve that for serving their country.  Sometimes justice does prevail.

The border Patrol Officers shot the drug smuggler in the butt as he was running away.(he had about 700 lbs. of Marijuana.  Then tried to cover it up. Not a good idea, but a couple of good men who did the wrong thing. It is great Bush pardoned them. The smuggler will stay in Federal Prison. I don't think it was a pardon but they are getting out of jail.

we are a republic converting into a democracy.  democracy is basically a poll based government.  no protection for the minority.  it was one reason that the founders set up an electoral college to balance the larger populated areas with the less densely populated areas.  of course the dems want to get rid of the electoral college because they want mob rule, i mean democracy.

during the french revolution when all the beheading took place, the lead beheader got beheaded and then they got napolean.  so instead of emigrating to other countries, europe created a population vacuum by killing each other, and now, with immigration, europe will basically be gone by 2050 due to simple demographics.  we say we want diversity, but basically most religion based governments are incompatible with the US constitution.

but, we don't see that for some reason.  not sure if it isn't reading, not listening, i don't know.  liberal foreign policy reminds me of bug bunny, "i dare you to cross this line.... i dare you to cross this line", except with a different ending with bugs in the pot.

Bush commuted the sentence of the border guards.  They will still be convicted felons the rest of their lives.  They have enough people in their corner though that they should have no problem getting jobs when they get out of jail.

The story as I've heard it is that the border guards came upon the drug smuggling mexican.  They thought they saw him pull a gun.  He may have had one or not?  They fired and didn't think they hit him.  Well in fact they winged him.

The border patrol found over 800 lbs of marijuana in the van.

The story gets better.  Texas prosecuter John Sutton gave the mexican drug runner a temporary VISA and immunity to come up and testify at the border agents trials.
The border agents got 11-12 years in the can for basically shooting an unarmed person.  He may have well been armed, but they couldn't prove it.  A mexican, a van and 800 pounds of pot.  You bet your a ss he was armed.  Anyways...

In July 08 the mexican was convicted of, you guessed it, smuggling drugs...  No way...

The agents have been in prison since '06 and have spent the most of the time in solitary to protect them from all the other imported criminals in the texas prison.

This case was greatest miscarriage of justice in the war on drugs.  The government spends millions of dollars to combat illegal drugs.  This was a case of justice being perverted in the name of politcal correctness.

In this case two good men were doing their job to defend this country of criminals and illegal drugs and ended up going to jail for shooting a guy in the butt who needed shot in the head...
I think border patrol policy should be to shoot all suspicous smugglers with a van trying cross the border first and then ask questions later....

This is a prime example of if you ever defending yourself or your property against someone trying to harm either your best bet is to shoot them in the head.  Good guy lives, bad guy is in the ground and then there is only one side of the story.

I agree with knabe... we are, or at least we were, a republic.  Now we are trying to become a democracy & do away with being a republic.  Being a republic & a country that was mostly founded upon Christian beliefs, is what made American great.  Now both are frowned upon by the majority & people wonder why this country is in, & has been in, a downward spiral.

It is starting already... the first people who publically disagree with Obama will be called racists. I am still hopeful that Obama can do some good.  He is a totally different man from Bush, so it will take some time to adjust. I think he is a master motivator, a master speaker, and a very intelligent leader. My concern is if he has enough executive experience to make the right decisions when the really hard stuff comes his way... and it will.  How long will it take the press and his followers to realize that he is not super human, and that he is not infallible. I do not think he is the Anti Christ as some of his opponents believe, but at the same time, he has been placed too high in public opinion. If he slips, he could be in quite a fall.

He will be propped up by the drive-by media at every turn and misstep.  The Obama worshipers have only one religion and that is their politics.  Ever wonder why it is that the far left seems to justify the means by the endgame?  Ever wonder why the far left are always having large scale protests and marches during the day while we are working trying to provide for our families?  Ever wonder why the left seem to have no shortage of volunteers?  The rest of Americans are hard working, God worshiping, family oriented people.  We have priorities that place our politics somewhere below God, spouse, children, extended family, job, cattle, etc.  To the left, the end political result is all that matters.  Their politics is their religion. And their end result has not worked in Russia or Cuba or China or anywhere else in the history of mankind, but they insist on trying and trying.  The middle 60% of us are supposed to sacrifice our way of life for the bottom 30%.  Don't worry about the top 10% they will be OK and won't have a change in lifestyle.  Our children will not have the same quality of life as we have enjoyed if these people get their way. Do I want Obama to succeed?  Not if he wants the far left agenda and most of his cabinet are far leftists.  I don't want Hilary Clinton in charge of anything for me.  I don't want Tom Daschle in charge of my health care ever.  I don't want some tax cheating liberal in charge of the United States Treasury.  So no I don't want the left to succeed, they will ruin this country.  In hearings today the truth came out, spending another trillion or so for job creation and they couldn't even answer if it would create one permanent job.  Everyone talks about the deficits in the past years, they want to spend more in the first month then has ever been spent in a single year ever in the history of this great country.  You can't spend you way into prosperity and neither can a country.  The only agenda is to move toward a more socialist society under the guise of we need this now.  No, I don't want that to succeed.  That's my 3 and 1/2 cents!

Unreal!!

WASHINGTON -- President Obama warned Republicans on Capitol Hill today that they need to quit listening to radio king Rush Limbaugh if they want to get along with Democrats and the new administration.

"You can't just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done," he told top GOP leaders, whom he had invited to the White House to discuss his nearly $1 trillion stimulus package.

One White House official confirmed the comment but said he was simply trying to make a larger point about bipartisan efforts.

"There are big things that unify Republicans and Democrats," the official said. "We shouldn't let partisan politics derail what are very important things that need to get done."

That wasn't Obama's only jab at Republicans today.

While discussing the stimulus package with top lawmakers in the White House's Roosevelt Room, President Obama shot down a critic with a simple message.

"I won," he said, according to aides who were briefed on the meeting. "I will trump you on that."

The response was to the objection by Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) to the president's proposal to increase benefits for low-income workers who don't owe federal income taxes.

Not that Obama was gloating. He was just explaining that he aims to get his way on the stimulus package and all other legislation, sources said, noting his unrivaled one-party control of both congressional chambers.

Republicans, along with Democratic leaders in the House and the Senate, met with Obama to hammer out details on a stimulus package that has reached $825 billion.

"We are experiencing an unprecedented economic crisis that has to be dealt with and dealt with rapidly," Obama said during the meeting. Republicans say that is too big a burden for a nation already crippled by debt and that it doesn't do enough to stimulate the economy by cutting taxes.

"You know, I'm concerned about the size of the package. And I'm concerned about some of the spending that's in there, [about] ... how you can spend hundreds of millions on contraceptives," House GOP Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) later said. "How does that stimulate the economy?"

But White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs countered: "There was a lot of agreement in that room this morning about the notion that we're facing an economic crisis unlike we've seen in quite some time ... There was agreement that we must act quickly to stimulate the economy, create jobs, put money back in people's pockets."

Gibbs disagreed with those who called the meeting window dressing.

"The president is certainly going to listen to any ideas," he said. "He will also go to Capitol Hill the beginning of next week to talk to Republican caucuses and solicit their input and their ideas."

Obama acknowledged that $825 billion was a tough price tag for some conservatives and deficit hawks to swallow.

"I know that it is a heavy lift to do something as substantial as we're doing right now," he said. "I recognize there are still some differences around the table and between the administration and members of Congress about particular details on the plan," he said. "But I think what unifies this group is a recognition that we are experiencing an unprecedented, perhaps, economic crisis that has to be dealt with," he said.

The president added that legislation governing the use of an additional $350 billion in bailout money for the financial industry must include new measures to ensure accountability.

Now this is what I want my stimulus doing. Creating jobs for people performing abortions in foreign countries. To me both aspects are wrong.

Obama lifts restrictions on abortion funding 24 Jan 2009 00:57:01 GMT
Source: Reuters
(Adds statement from Obama, details)

By Jeff Mason and Deborah Charles

WASHINGTON, Jan 23 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Friday lifted restrictions on U.S. government funding for groups that provide abortion services or counseling abroad, reversing a policy of his Republican predecessor George W. Bush.

The Democratic president's decision was a victory for advocates of abortion rights on an issue that in recent years has become a tit-for-tat policy change each time the White House shifts from one party to the other.

When the ban was in place, no U.S. government funding for family planning services could be given to clinics or groups that offered abortion services or counseling in other countries, even if the funds for those activities came from non-U.S. government sources.

"For the past eight years, (the restrictions) have undermined efforts to promote safe and effective voluntary family planning in developing countries," Obama said in a statement.

"It is right for us to rescind this policy and restore critical efforts to protect and empower women and promote global economic development."

In contrast to his executive order to close the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, which he signed in a ceremony before journalists, the president issued this order quietly and the White House released a statement at 7 p.m. EST/2400 GMT.

The decision has been called the Mexico City Policy because it was unveiled at a United Nations conference there in 1984 and became one of the centerpiece social positions of the administration of then-President Ronald Reagan, a Republican.

Critics call it the "gag rule" because it cuts funds to groups that advocate lifting abortion restrictions, which critics say means it blocks free speech. They say it reduced healthcare for some of the world's poorest women.

Planned Parenthood, a health care provider and advocacy group for abortion rights, welcomed the move in a statement.

"No longer will health care providers be forced to choose between receiving family planning funding and restricting the health care services they provide to women," it said.

CRITICS ON BOTH SIDES

Anti-abortion activists criticized Obama.

"When we wake up every morning to a deepening financial crisis, it is an insult to the American people to bail out the abortion industry," said Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life.

"Planned Parenthood is a billion-dollar company and they do not need additional resources to burden the American taxpayer."

Former President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, rescinded the rule when he took office in January 1993 and his successor, Republican George W. Bush, reinstated it in January 2001.

Obama said he wanted to depoliticize the topic and directed his staff to reach out to people on both sides to work on reducing unintended pregnancies.

He also promised to work with Congress to resume funding to the U.N. Population Fund.

U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell expressed disapproval. "I have long supported the Mexico City Policy and believe this administration's decision to be counter to our nation's interests," he said in a statement.

The United States spends more than $400 million on overseas family planning assistance each year.

Critics of the funding ban say the anti-abortion restrictions have resulted in huge drops for funding worldwide to organizations that provide family-planning services and basic healthcare. They say this means many women are deprived of contraception and other health services in poor countries, leading to back-alley abortions and deaths.

The Center for Reproductive Rights says, for example, that in Ethiopia and Lesotho, some nongovernmental organizations are no longer able to offer comprehensive and integrated healthcare services to patients suffering from HIV/AIDS.

Abortion rights opponents and groups who support the Mexico City Policy dispute the view that it has led to an increase of illegal abortions or deaths overseas.

Unlike Clinton and Bush, Obama did not act on the rule on the Jan. 22 anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 Supreme Court ruling that made abortions legal throughout the United States. (Additional reporting by Ed Stoddard)

It looks more and more to me that our current democratic senate would like to eventually have a "Roman" style of government where the Emperor has dominion over every piece of land, etc in the country and the "Senators" are the wealthy and powerful ones who control every business and person.    Every move made by the liberals puts more people on the welfare rolls in one way or another and moves us closer to a majority of our populace actually working for the government and less and less of it actually having enough wealth to own anything.  We wil continue the trend of forcing more of  our food production overseas because we are too "sensitive" to how food(especially meat) is produced, let other countries (who would love to see us fail) build their financial power through selling us oil and energy even though we have huge stores of our own, and generally act like we are better than everyone else and to good to get our hands dirty.  If we don't allow opposing veiwpoints in media to point this out then we also will have the equivalent of a state run media.

Kind of sounds like the Romans again doesn't it---huge military power but they relied on someone else to supply them with their basic needs and killed those that showed any opposing viewpoints.  We all know how the Roman empire ended don't we??  But in the mean time--Hail Cesar and the Senators!

With this much control in the hands of the liberal democrats, don't be surprised if the subject of repealing the term limit on Presidents come up if Obama makes it to a second term and the dems would have the majority to pass it.  Then we might as well start calling him Emperor Obama and be ready to witness the fall of the Liberal Empire!!  Lord help us!!  JMHO
