DL and all,
Thanks for the information.  This will be interesting to watch.  I have several with Cunia in them and have not had monkey mouth or a SP Maine calf.  I did have a shorthorn one several years ago out of a Maine cross bull, but never have had another one.  I let the calf get 3 months old and there is not hope.  I should have shot it the first day, as I got attached caring for it and its momma.

Do any of you think that this sort of information/questions, has or had anything to do with the AMAA board changing the regs. as far as the zero tolerance of registering PHA carrier cattle?

yes.  there will be other defects as well like arthritis.  like i've said before, these carriers will have other alleles to the defect gene which may be important, and they may have other alleles for other genes that are important. i already know this to be fact.

Had a spastic Paresis calf last year that I had to put down at 2 1/2 months of age.  Breeding was Money Man X (Angus X Quick Fix/Outrageous Cow).  Definitely SP, calf would lay down all the time and when up would kind of put all weight on one foot and the other would be off the ground and kind of sway back and forth.  Progressively got worse until calf couldn't hardly get around.  It was sad to see a healthy calf other than the SP just go down hill.

Is there a test for SP yet? We have a great looking stout Money Man cow we might flush this spring...

No - we need more samples to identify the mutation - so if you have a calf with SP it would be grand if you submitted samples
