Looking through the videos from the best ever thread, and the you tube suggestions, there were a few times in some of the videos at the judge asked the sire of a steer........

Is that appriopriate?        Doesn't that allow for some hint of favoritism, perceived or real, and in some thing like that perception is reality....

So you have a final drive, judge asks the sire of each steer,  what difference at that point does it make who the sire is of a steer?  Could go either way to "break a tie".   Thought could be " the heat wave will win,  or it could go give it the kid that had the guts to go with an unproven bull.......   Either way why does it matter.

Not saying it influenced the judge in the videos but why allow for the perception that it might?

No...I agree. I've judged a few shows & I wouldn't want the burden of knowing the sire or even the breed. Those questions should be put off until after the judging. I have asked after the show before because I am interested as a breeder, but factors that might reveal bias & that have no bearing on sorting the cattle should be left alone in my opinion.

Totally agree! I think asking weight and making small talk like saying nice job is ok but what of a judge was a breeder and has had a bad expernice with lautner for example so he didn't pick that calf because it was a monopoly but picked a walks alone just because it was something non lautner

Agree. Had a judge at a small county show once ask me the sire of a hfr which I told him, should of refused. He placed her towards the back then got on the mike and said she would of been higher but the sire had no place in our industry. I was very p***ed. I took her to a RoyaL two years later she was champion female.

so, granted...the above actions by a judge is bolony.  However, I've judged plenty of shows and I have asked about the sire of the good ones (usually after I've placed them) but it has no bearing on where the critter ends up in the show.  I ask for my info only.  FWIW- not all judges are crooks.

In judging a few showmanship classes I have asked pedigree just to see how much the kid knew.  Usually I would ask the open ended question: What can you tell me about your calf's pedigree?  Had a kid or 2 that could tell me everything for 3 generations and some kids only knew the sire and maybe the breed of the dam.  I would say it's an appropriate question if the answer, when correct or believable, is not used in the placing of the calf

I judged a county fair show last night and was very curious on the sires of my grand and reserve champion however I refrained from asking what they were until after the show was over. As a breeder, I am curious on matings. The matings happen to be a Babe Ruth x Meyer for Grand and then a Smilin Bob x Maine x Angus for reserve.

Exactly...AFTER the show, because that's what you do. No matter how unbiased you think you can be, pedigree & breeding should not be needed to place any class. The only exception is purebred females showing in AOB classes where you want to compare the animals in the class to the ideal for their breed. And I still think biases can be an obstacle in that situation.

If I ever did ask about a sire & I let the answer influence my placing, I wouldn't admit that it did!

I completely agree. The judge shouldn't ask the for the sire. He might not mean it to affect his decision but it might.

I judge shows not cattle however and I ask kids where the animal came from and breeding at times just to make chit chat and congratulate kids on picking a quality animal and to also say "yes that person is a good reliable source" has no bearing on placing however.

I would agree that after is the right time, Thou I have had a judge ask me what the sire was on , and it was a no name sire. I was impressed when he still put the animal in the top of its class. I think good judges make the right calls regardless of anything, breed, sire, owner, ect.

Even making chit chat, and if you know it did not influence you, perception might be that it did.    If the calf from the "good reliable breeder" won, and the kid next to that kid over heard it and thought his calf, or sheep pig what ever, was better,  it does not seem unresonable to think the kid will go back to the barn and tell what he overheard, opening the door for percievec conflict of interest.

I agree if you want to know ask after the show,  I would be interested as well and if in position would ask.....  But before just doesn't seem right.
