If you have already tested the dam & used a tested bull & both are clean, do you still have to test the offspring? Certainly would save a lot of $'s!

they are "clean" by parentage, and listed as such on registration papers.

i showed a pic of this on an earlier thread, but can't find it.

Knabe is correct, the only time I can think of you would still need to test would be if they are going to be a collected bull or a donor dam and then they require a test on file.

I just had this happen. I have an appendix Shorthorn heifer. She is also simmi. Her momma was out of a carrier bull. They wanted test on momma before the Simmental registration would register her. BUT, I tested her anyways because of my concerns. Heifer came back a carrier. Momma was a  carrier by parentage and the sire of this heifer was clean by DNA. So, i did not have to test the dam since the results came back the way they did. By parentage the dam had to be a carrier. Kind of what you were saying I guess. ::)

Is it recorded on the papers with the breed association?  If it is, then it should carry forward and become clean by parentage.  If it's a bull you are going to be promoting and using a lot, I'd probably go ahead and test - especially if he is more than one generation out from the original tested parents.

I'm not sure I'd buy a bull without having an actual test....unless I knew the seller pretty well. I for sure would test him myself. It just seems like it is a setup for a scam. What happens if you spend 7,000 $ on a bull and son of a gun, he is a carrier....can you get your money back? A tube could get labeled wrong or whatever ;)

I agree Aj. I won't buy a bull or heifer without an actual test. Might be wrong parents on the paper. So....if the animal is worth selling and if the animal is worth me buying, it is worth a test...especially a $27 test.

actually it's a $54 test since the Maines required both. I was just curious if they've set an actual rule.

I am with you and aj on this one - you don't test I don't buy - semen or cattle - period.

From the AMAA re free by parentage

We can only list an animal free by parentage if we have lab ids (status as FREE) on the parents of such animal.  We are going to require all donors and AI sires to be tested for both.  For example, including registered Angus cows.... even though we know that a registered Angus is free, we can not list her offspring as free until we have a lab id on her(and of course the sire is listed as free)!  This has been set by the Board of Directors, so we have to have documentation to list as such!

Thanks DL- that helps a lot! I'd rather test my cows & use clean bulls than test everything. Of course for sale like the Expo I know you need to test or if a buyer requests.

How much does it cost to send things to be tested to Champaign-Urbana?

Jamie

Both TH and PHA tests are done by AgriGenomics, they are located in Mansfield, IL.  Do NOT send samples to the University as they are not done there.  There are new submission forms I think floating around, online.  They should be the ones that have pricing information on the top.

A test costs $27 each animal (if sending over 25 animals it is $25), if you want an additional test on the same sample, the cost is an additional $15, so if you send in a sample and want TH and PHA on it, the total cost is $42.  Only want TH - $27, only want PHA - $27.... hopefully that's clear I know it sounds confusing... ;D

What I want to know is "THE TOTAL COSTS" of getting a sample collected and sent, processed and all. Everyone keeps talking about $27, but can I pull the blood, and how does it need to ship? Next UPS or can it go regular USPS? Looks like to me unless your vets work for free, it's going to add up quickly.

Samples don't have to be collected by a vet, if you can bleed your own animals do it (at least 2cc's in purple top EDTA tube and invert to prevent clotting).  Don't need to send them next day by any means..2-3 day UPS or Fed Ex is fine.  USPS priority is fine as well, just depends on the weather, blood cannot be frozen or get too hot.

So can we send complaints about animals that we wanted to be THF and PHAF but came back as carriers to you guys as well. Because we had a bunch of cows that weren't carriers until you guys said they were. :p

Not a problem!!  Can't you tell I'm trying to avoid the 2,000 blood tubes sitting on my bench  (lol)

ITK - Sorry about that!

Turbo is doing great!  His first trip by himself to the vet went well, he only tried to kick the vet once....then he got some juice... lol!  We x-rayed his ankle, and everything was great!  It was completely healed and there was no damage to the growth plate.  So he's got some real work ahead of him.  He gets to go to the trainer in November for a month, then he'll have the winter off and back again in the spring.  Hopefully I'll be able to send some win pictures next summer!!

I'm ready for the new foal.  Still got over a month yet to go!  The mare is getting big and crabby.  Not sure of the sex yet, hoping for a little buckskin filly though.
