Hello everyone, I'm new to the site and looking for suggestions.  I have a small herd of older charolais cows that i would like to raise smokey heifers out of to build a new herd with.  Need input on sires for the charolais cows and sires/breed suggestions for the future heifers (stay with the same breed as their sire or try to make 3-way calves?)

Depends on what you are trying to do.  Do you want productive beef cattle that will  wean heavy calves and produce quality carcass,  or are you shooting for 'hair', 'freaky neck extension', etc., - things the show/clubby folks seem to want.
The choices would likely be VERY different.

Breedem to a good Angus  bull , Concensus  7229 -or TC FREEDOM-  BC LOOK OUT or Duff  New Edition or Final Answer or sons ...  You would then have some very funtional females that I would  to a very good Charolais composite bull....Will keep every thing the same color -smoke...  If you want cream color use a Angus bull with the red gene ....Some of the clubby bulls have plenty of growth ...

You're wanting smokes out of those Charolais cows - go with an Angus sire.  I'd go with a black Simmental on the resulting heifers, but it's your choice.
I'll throw out another Angus sire - B/R Destination 928; he ain't pretty, but he sires above average growth, moderate milk,  high marbling/ribeye, good disposition, has all the tenderness gene markers, and is positive for $EN.
Have a couple of heifers on the ground by him, and they are long and growthy. Look like they're gonna make good cows, and should pass good carcass traits to their calves.
Will be breeding to him again this fall & next spring on cows that are being bred Angus.

As far as breeds go, either Angus or Angus or maybe Angus. There are plenty of bulls that would compliment most Charolais females, either heifers or cows, and you'll benefit from about as much heterosis as you can achieve. You might considers other options to go back on the F1 smoke heifers, but the first cross to me is a no brainer in terms of what breed to use.

If you're in Oklahoma, and want a TRUE maternally-oriented Angus, call Bill Corbitt, and get an Emulous bull. Anything else is just "black", IMO. This is coming from experience of my family using James Roberts' Line-bred Emulous Angus cattle. Like most people in the Ozarks, we Dairied until the 80's, and We had a bunch of HerfXHol BWF cows and some Yellow Baldies that were out of these cows. The smokey heifers out of the yellow cows were fail-safe, and lasted us for years.
