Truck scales are usually in 20 lb increments.  So you could be off close to 40 lbs on the steer's weight.  40 lbs isn't a big deal on a trailer load, but can make a individual look really good, or really bad.  I am not saying you are wrong by doing so, just a heads up on how far the weight might be fluctuating.  You will still see the long term weight gain, by using the truck scale.

Like HAB said, variations in the weighing system could make a HUGE difference in what appears to be your steers performance.

The amount of fuel in your truck, rocks in your pocket, manure in your trailer, wind blowing on the side of the trailer, last time the scale was "tared" etc etc. will have a really big impact and will not be accurate enough to show a true rate of gain over a short period of time.

Thanks for the tips and info. We have gone to taking him off the trailer and right on the scale, its a digital one and its been around his taped weight. As long as he is getting big im good with that, I will see his true weight in a few days when we weigh in at the PA beef expo.
