So I sat down on the kitchen floor last night with a 335' roll of nylon rope and was going to make some halters.

When I discovered I had forgotten how!  ???

So, if any of you have any good rope halter "recipes" or directions please share!

Jamie, I will give you a phone number where you can buy the best rope halters at $5-$6 each. I buy about 20-30 every year, and you can select from about 10 colors. The rope is very soft and the halters seem to last and last. I know I could not be bothered to make my own halters  anymore. He will send them on the bus or by mail. That's my recipe. Works for me!

If you already have the rope this info is too late, but I would strongly suggest you call the "halter lady" in Illinios. She will make calf sized halters (she also makes bigger ones with larger sized rope) , variety of colors,  with no pokey ends (like sullivan halters have on the nose piece) for about $2.00 per halter. These halters are the best! Last forever, never unravel, and are pliable.
Wonderful family to deal with. If you are interested I have her phone number.

Yeah I hear you.

I was standing in UFA holding the couple halters they had the same colour, (which wasn't nearly enough anyway) I just figured if I bought te rope I could have them all the same colour and I like to make some longer than normal for halter breaking.

I couldn't find anything on google, I'll have to take an existing halter apart and have a closer look when I get the chance.

Didn't particularily feel like going out in the dark and the rain last night.

(lol)

The best place to make halters used to be in front of the wood stove.  That way you could stick the end of the rope in to get it melted down.  I used to have some old literature showing how to make a halter .... no idea if it is still around.

if your game I will try to tell you because it's pretty simple.  if you have a old halter that you like the measurements handy you might want to use it for nose piece.  the length of nose piece kinda varies with the size of cattle you use them on.  the regular size halter works great on most cattle , but for these small clubbies I try to make them smaller .  Have the ends melted  first ,measure from right side of nose piece over to other side an also add for your lope.  Have loop formed an run  one end through the other side of loop or between the three strsnds , then get the other end of halter an run throught the rope just above where you had before . You should have a loop with about ten inches on right side  an 12 on left side of loop. If you can pull on both sides of loop an it don't move , you have your loop made right , then grab right end of rope agout eight inches from loop , twist the rope so that the three strands all make a loop, then take left end of halter an run through the three loops , when  through that then run it through loop hole  an you are through .  after doing some of these you will figure out hoe to make them better as you do more of them.  When you run rope through three loops , if you go one way through the extra rope will stick up in calfs eye , if you run through three loops the other way the tail will point down, an this is the way I prefer mine to go.  Hope this helps an if have problems sure will try to help you........... Jamie

  Yep I agree 100%

Used to do that at home years ago, in fact I still have a small scar on the inside of my wrist where a drop of buening nylon landed doing that trick when I was about 12 years old.  :-\

Thanks all, I took a halter apart and jogged my memory, should have lots of halters for the season now I would think.

Those pictures and the directions everyone gave are a great help though. I copied them to my desktop.

Happy Halter Breaking!

Jamie, you better make a few extra if you are going to halter break the 15 calves and bred heifers that are heading your way, shortly following the semi load of hay.OK... I will be generous and I will supply the halters in the deal!

Would eternal grattitude count for anything?

Hmmm what WOULD I do for a load of hay....

I'd chew Tin Foil.

I'd Move to Siberia.

I'd become an Oilers fan.

I'd walk your wife's dog in front of a Biker Bar.

I'd show a Highland.

I'd drive a Ford.

Or I'd probably halter break 15 calves.

Justintime please let me know when this is happening, -------One thing we have been doing with the halter  lately is putting a 1 inch  brass or silver ring in the loop , pull your lope tight though to hold ring , halters release better for breaking calves an also last longer ....

Picture of the halters we make  with the ring in them, I guess I should not recomend them to much cause this is first year we have used them, but some of our friends used them an really like to use them when halter breaking calves because they release so good.
