Boy howdy, I went out to a local sale today, and nearly half the calves didn't bring base price! Granted, it was a challenging day in terms of weather, but the set of calves was TREMENDOUS. Never seen such a solid set of steers and heifers sell so light. I couldn't resist, so I picked up a pretty good steer. Be fun to see how he turns out.

Which sale was it and how many did they sell?

It was the Volosin Club Calf sale, and they sold 21 head through the ring. There were 11 or so left to look through after the fact. Most everything was available for base price. Since I sold a bull yesterday morning, I of course had to get rid of that money ASAP and buy a steer.  ;D But, I want to compete a little more, and get sort of tired of my pasture cattle getting their pants beat off. So hopefully, this calf will help me out.

Good for you! What's he out of?

Now now! Don't try to breed one like this and beat me!  ;) Seriously, he's a Rainmaker and out of a Mossy Oak cow. Still haven't gotten him home, but just maybe I'll post some pictures of him when we get him in the pen. Stout little sucker. We're thinking about 1150 lb for our July fair. Maybe not heavy enough to take grand, but a good little steer nonetheless.

Hmmmm....thanks for the report. We were taking a shorthorn heifer to the Rocky Mountain Shorthorn sale this weekend. Wondered how sales were going.

Well, the weather put a pretty good damper on buyer enthusiasm. Lotta folks just stayed home. I wouldn't be really afraid of selling, but this sale had a lot of things against it. As for money, the lot 1 Monopoly sold at $4300. He was the high. Overall, 9 head averaged $1740. Calves were being stolen, but there's a lot of happy customers with great calves for low prices. I think Volosin calves are really going to kick butt this coming show season.

lol............Rachel is showing a full brother to Tommy Boy and a steer from Tommy. Also a heifer from Deadwood and a heifer from Ricky Bobby. Sold a red roan Tommy calf to Nicole Westfall in El Paso. Are you showing any heifers? Going to stock show?
We showed an Irish Whisky Mossy Oak last year. He was nice, if we had another 60 days for weight we might have just won. Start pounding the feed now, much easier for them to gain now and hold back if you need to.
