Used Navaho a few years back and some of the best calves ever had,calves alittle bigger but no problems.thats why I like this bulls genetics with two shots of Navaho.

missed that THANK YOU! Great thread. The young man asking is interested for use on heifers for sure. I think they need some side and depth of rib little more shape. Both nice females. I suggested some of the more compact meatier bulls on the market. This bull is one that he found. I knew nothing about.

Had 30 doses delivered in my tank yesterday, April Fool's day!

Have 22 heifers to inseminate this spring so will be putting him in thick.  There are only three whites so I hope to get a good, hopefully roan bunch of calves in 2015.

I feel you have confidence that this bull is safe to use on heifers????

I have a very scientific method of deciding which bulls to try on heifers!

Firstly, I look at what their CE and BW EPD's are in comparison with bulls that I have used successfully in the past.

The one time I let SP comments sway me from my path was with JSF Gauge 137W and I regret it!  He is heifer safe as the BW's were tiny and I got excellent calves from my mature cows.  Unfortunately my supply was finished before the first calves were born, I only got 30 doses.

Secondly, I try to stick with asterisk free genetics.

1) the CE and BW epds of low accuracy (99% of the breed) bulls are fabricated from generations past and aren't reflective of the individuals performance much less the progeny's. 

2) Asterick free genetics are no more pure shorthorn than most other non asterick genetics.  It's a marketing tool- that's it.

No its a fact.  Call the association for yourself and ask them what percentage of active registered cattle have performance data submitted on them.

We had 12 calve sired by Yesterday in 2013, all out of first calf heifers. 11 were unassisted and 1 we had to pull. I realize that this is a small sample size and only 1 herd but based on this I would consider him heifer safe. It is also worth noting that he has 3 generations of easy calving bulls on the sires side of his pedigree, Saskvalley Wholesale, Shadow and Ultra. All of these bulls were used successfully on heifers in our herd.

I realise that and should maybe have put in either  or  <beer> after my first sentence!

That aside, S. Ultra 12J having top 1% for CE, BW and $CEZ with 143 progeny, his sire S. Wholesale 114W having 2%, 2% and 10% respectively, albeit with lower accuracy, and his dam being below breed average for CE and BW persuaded me to try him.

These figures compare very favourably with JSF Gauge and therefore, working with what I have at my disposal, EPD wise, I committed myself.

As far as the asterisk thing goes, it is a personal preference.  I have used asterisk bulls in the past when I couldn't get asterisk free, but would have preferred not to.  I realise that pedigrees may have been manipulated, wittingly or unwittingly, in the past but that is a legacy we all have to live with!
