I got a picture today of Lot 28,/// Man what a beast: I temember the first Canadian bulls I saw in at Denver were maybe 94-96- Solid red ones from OKOTOKS I cant remember but I really thought they were on the money- and I asked Hunsley - DID YOU SEE THOSE THREE-look how easy keeping looking yatta yatta and he said : they just have a bunch of reject junk that we sent North- AND I SAID-THEY DAM SURE DONT LOOK ANY WHERE NEAR AS HARDOING LOOKING AS WHAT YOU AND CAGWIN ARE PUSHING-I was very impressed with those three red bulls -big time. Well-a couple years later a bull of mine called jR Walker had hiefers out of his ONLY calf crop standing in first in evey class they were in at the national  JR .show-and Hunsley (after seeing me speak to Mike Dugdale) motioned the judge to drop them to second in all but one class-Im still proud 1 was first that day- Its a Shorthorn thing-BOTTOM LINE-HATS OFF TO THE CANADIAN BREEDERS GREAT JOB :and if anything-you improved and moved forward from the "junk" that Cagwin and Hunsely so pompously implied that they "duped" your programs with O0

Some really good cattle-the sask valley vision bull must be quite something-Really good bulls and hiefers 19 26 and others-A couple Bell M lots 12 and 17 in particular-I like 38 if his back wheels are OK-and 39-both from Muridale-But my pick of the bulls has to be lot 28-and I saw a picture of his dam the "goose cow"-man-what a SOW. O0

Look at the topline of Cumberland Gay Lad  and his son in the sale, you don't see many toplines like that anymore.

You mean the presence of one?

I mean the strength and straitness as opposed to the swaybacks that seems to be more  common than it used to be.  It is more than one breed too.

I am going to have to check this out, but I think there may be an error in the article about Cumberland Gay Lad, in that I do not remember him being a herd sire at Harold Bateman's Bonnyview herd. When Bateman's dispersed their herd, we purchased about half the cows and there wasn't any Gay Lad breeding in the cows they had. If he was at Batemans, it was only for a brief period of time, as I am pretty sure Gay Lad was a two year old when I first saw him at Charlie Campbells.  If memory serves me correctly, Gay Lad went directly to Charlie Campbell and the Mortons. I saw him walking in those herds for many years. We thought he was a huge bull at the time, but I think he would be considered pretty moderate framed today. He was massive in his design- thick and deep sided and his offspring were the same. They were pretty easy fleshing, which is another excellent trait, however, we have produced 2 Gay Lad sons in the past few years and I have been a little disappointed with the ultrasound results. Marbling was pretty decent but not as high as I had hoped for, and ribeye area very marginal at best. Despite this, I do believe these genetics can be a very useful tool to use. I still have a few vials of Gay Lad semen that I will eventually use in a flush, if I can ever decide on what donor to mate with him. Coyote beat me to the stashe, and bought all the remaining Gay Lad semen and he is being very unneighbourly and will not share it!
