If we decide to sell some cows, we are trying to decide which will be the best way to sell them.
Open cows?  Cow/calf pairs? or Bred cows?

What's your thoughts?

If you are selling them open I would be wondering why they weren't bred.  I know some will say "so you can breed them as you want" but an open makes me think that you could not get them bred possibly.  If I am buying I'm moreiinterested in breds or 3 in 1's.  I am convinced they are still able to breed and I get a quicker return on my investment.JMO

In my opinion in most cases price will be adjusted based on their current status.  You may get a higher price for selling a pair over and open but not necessarily  a higher profit.  In other words a bred cow may bring $800 in the fall, $900 in early spring, and $1100 with a calf ready to go to grass...the pair may bring more but with labor and feed it may have ben a wash.  I agree with steered, I don't like to buy open cows for a few reasons...as he said you don't know why they are open and also you are a long ways from any income with an open cow. If you get her bred the day she walks on your place your still well over a year from having a calf to sell.  The only exception might be an outstanding cow that has been in an ET program and is open for that reason.
