Semen Checking for Quality

Is there anyway to check semen for quality of the "swimmers." Also if there is a way, can you check about the quality if its flush worthy or just breeding worthy. Thanks for your help!

If they swim, they are capable.  In a flush, you are going to use multiple straws, so you miss the chance of mis handled semen to a degree,
Don't use semen you have not had calves out of, the whole batch could be bad,

Any good vet. practice should be able to ck semen quality for you. They semen ck many bulls every breeding season. Ck should be for viability, mobility, & formation of the sperm. You can buy a microscope and learn how to ck semen quality yourself. I ck all of the semen that we flush with here.

How much do you need to put on the slide? Can you put just a little dab from each straw and check right before you insert it?

Just a tiny drop. You need to use a cover slip to actually get the sample thin enough to see it better. If you want to ck morphology, you need to dye it & kill it so it quits moving & the dye makes it so that you can see it better.
