I just finished our ad for the State Fair issue of the Show Circuit and thought that I would share. Please let me know if you see any spelling errors (I am a notoriously bad speller) or have any ideas to make it better. I have until the 10th for camera ready.

Thanks for looking - DS

A couple suggestions.

The paragraph about what the sale offering I shortened to:Sale calves will consist of 25 steers and heifers. This group will be the top end or our own calf crop plus a few we have purchased from other top breeders in the country.

Also, the white text in all caps is hard to distinguish where a sentence ends and a new one begins. The first time I read it I didn't notice the period and thought it was a run-on sentence until I went back and re-read and noticed the period. Although it may appear more distinctly in a magazine, but that's what I saw from the file posted here.

My 2 cents from what I learned in my copy editing class.

Good theme, awesome background

I have one that I was tooling around with that I will post, but no laughs.  It was NOT used in the magazine, I got voted down by everyone involved.  (lol)

David, a very catchy ad. It should get people's attention. Question... what are those big grasshoppers in the background of the picture. I was not aware that you had grasshoppers that big in Indiana. By the way, if you lived closer, there are people here in Western Canada who would kill for a hay crop like that.  Great marketing and promotion! Congrats.

I am amazed how much that picture looks like where I live. I could easily convince people that it was taken on my farm.Wide open spaces. Flat as a 4 day old glass of beer. On a clear day here, I can see the back of my head! Looks like it might be the same where this picture was taken

I think the light blue text in the upper right(sky) is difficult to read ... could it be black?

I don't think it could be.  It would contrast too much against the background and take away from the soft background.

Great photo and design layout. I'll have to agree with LN's comments. Anywhere you can simplify is usually a good idea.

I like it.  I'd leave the bigger bold white letters alone, but I'd consider turning most of the smaller, non-bold white letters to a pinkish/orangish color (like the color used in "visit our website"), IMHO.

Thanks for all of the help.

This will probably be the last version I get a chance to work on. I shortened the text some and added an extra space between sentences. I can’t give a firm number on the calves because in the past when I did and we were under that number people thought we had sold some before the sale. The color thing is a little tricky to judge not only because the difference in monitors but also you have to convert from CMYK to RGB to be viewed on the net. Besides that I have done all of our own ads for the past 8 years and I still can’t get the color to match in different magazines.

The background is actually 2 different pictures.  The “sky” is an old shot I had from home and the bottom “hay field” is one that I took last week in Lamesa, TX. The little boy is my 2yr old Gavin. (My brother in-law got about 5.5 bales / acre off of that ½ pivot)

Thanks again - DS

Jason – your ad would definitely get my attention but I am not so sure it would make me want to buy a calf  <cowboy>

Jason are you the Shamwow guy? Or is he your idol?

Well I haven't arrested lately for punching a hooker, so I am going to have to say no.  ;D

Just goofing around.
