KMS Canasta 8114 39P Semen is now available in the US and stored at Hawkeye Breeders Service, Iowa. Semen is priced at $40/unit. TH and PHA Free.

Canasta was is the undefeated Canadian National Champion bull, two time Agribition Champion and one of the only Shorthorns to ever be a top ten qualifier in the RBC Beef Supreme Challenge (the largest Supreme show in Canada). Canasta is also a full brother to KMS Vanity 8114 23T, the $15,600 heifer calf bought by Kolt Cattle Co. at Agribition, and KMS Annie Oakley 8114 49R, the undefeated heifer calf champion in 2005.

The Casino bull is coming two this spring, so his first crop of calves is on the way. He was syndicated up here at the Royal Sale so there is no semen available north of the border. We hadn't planned to draw export qualified semen, so we unfortunately don't have any semen available in the US as of yet. If we do decide to go that route, though, I will certainly let you know!

Thanks,

Canasta has two crops of calves on the ground and has so far been siring calves in the 90 - 100 pound range. The bull himself had a 104 pound birthweight, (which is about the normal weight for his mother's calves, no matter who she is bred to). We have had a few people use him on heifers with no problems, but I would recommend him for use on cows.

Due to limited use the first year, there haven't been alot of calves off him out on the road but the ones that have are doing quite well. The Grand Champion Bull, heifer calf champion, and the bull calf at side the Grand Champion Female (pic is attached) at the North American Beef Congress were all sired by Canasta (they teamed up to win Jr. Get-of-Sire for Sidetrack Stock Farm). A son was the Reserve Champion in an all-breeds bull calf Jackpot this year in BC, and another son was at side the Commercial Supreme Champion Female at the Provincial 4-H show. As well, we had a report of a good Canasta steer winning in Saskatchewan. The Casino bull that is pictured did well for us as a calf and again on the Eastern side of the country this year.

I'm biased, but I think Canasta's best is yet to come. As a bit of an added plus, his calves are super docile (I have never worked with calves so easy to halter-break!) so they make nice junior prospects.

Sounds good, NHR. If you are going to Fort Worth this year and are still there for the open show, his full sister, Vanity (the white heifer pictured in the original post) will hopefully be there, so go have a look!

Boy, Howdy!!!!!

That's what I like to see. The cow is just right-sized, easy fleshing, and, weaned over half her body weight, in pounds of calf. That's what "made" Shorthorns....it wasn'y "hair and color".

Good Job!

I didnt get to watch most of the open show because we were getting calves ready to be shown. How did the white heifer do?

We took a 1st in class 1 and a 3rd in class 2.

Garybob, Thanks for the compliments! His mom is one of our best cows. She always weans her bull calves at 850-900 lbs and breeds back right on time, so you see she can really produce.

NHR, the Vanity heifer was Reserve Junior Heifer Calf Champ. Looks like there was some pretty tough company there, so I'd say you did pretty well also. I can't find the open show pictures up anywhere yet, but I was looking through the Junior show pictures and spotted your entries. Both heifers looked excellent, but I was really impressed by your Cumberland heifer. She must be due to calve any day now judging by how much udder she is showing. She looks like she's going to be a pretty sharp looking cow. Congrats!

the cumberland heifer calved on friday january 25th. she had a 85 lb solid red bull calf. the calf is either sired by maverick or ss kaboom. we only had one straw of maverick semen and needed to get her bred so we followed up with a straw of kaboom that evening. we have a call into the Maury show to see who the daddy is. just kidding. we will have a parental test done. the cumberland heifer has a perfect udder on her with the calf suckling now.

Congrats NHR! I talked to Maverick and he is prepared to take a parentage test but he's a little afraid of talk shows  ;D Either way, sounds like a perfect-sized baby. Will you guys be taking the pair on to Junior Nationals this year?

We should have them at the jr nationals as a cow-calf pair, we will also be able to show the bull as bred and owned

Dori,
Think your females look wonderful on your websight. Would you say this bull is more female oriented? I am a BIG fan of Sonny. I am going to try some Epic this year full brother.

I will take some this weekend. She did not lose much weight from calving and the calf is extremely active. He thinks he is a race horse or something because he loves to run. We will take this pair to Houston and we hope to do very well.

Canasta is definitely a maternally oriented bull. We calved out his first daughters this year and they have beautiful square udders (despite a couple being off cows with working, but not so pretty udders). Like Sonny, I would say his heifer calves are slightly better than his bull calves. That said, he has sired some very competitive bull calves and our best of both heifers calves and bull calves from our 2008 crop (we are just wrapping up calving for this year) are all sired by Canasta.

He is a little bit different for a maternal bull in that he also sires alot of performance. Reports from everyone who has used him say their calves really gain weight and do it quickly. We had a couple people using him for steers, that, after using him the first year, backed AI'ing their cows off two months so their calves were the right size!!
