Check the rules, before buying your steer. He has to be nominated by a breeder, etc. Cagwin, or maybe even itk, or Doc could tell you better than i can.

To be eligible for the Breeders Cup prize money, then he has to come from a breeder that has paid a nomination fee for the Appendix (oh excuse me) : the Shorthorn Plus division or for the purebred division.
He can still show in the futurity though.

we showed a steer last year but he was not in the breeders cup but we still got to show
