Hi everyone! This is my fist year showing a shorthorn. I just wanted advice from you on showing this breed. I have a shorthorn calf to show for next year. He is sired by Sin City so he might be tall. Should I feed him a lot so he won't grow as tall? Or do you want them tall?? If possible, do you want the to have the crossbred look of short and almost petite? My goal is for him to be 1300 pounds. Is that big enough?? Any comments will help!

ShowSteerGirl101 - You have picked a great breed for a first year project as far as I am concerned! Hopefully he is gentle and halter broke. Genetics will play a big part in how tall your steer grows, but good feed and hay are very important. Is there a local 4-H Club that you can join, or perhaps an extension agent that can help you? 4-H is an excellent way to get advice and also pointers on how to maximize the potential of your steer. Most of all, be safe and have fun! <party>

Without a picture it is tough to give to much advice. I would say in general Sin City calves can get alittle bigger. Feed him the same as you would any other calf. A good one is a good one no matter the breed so treat him the same. I just hope for your sake he isn't white. ;D

The best Shorthorn steers are the ones that compare to crossbreds. I think feeding him hard, getting him fat, and keeping him there without pushing to far would be fine. Maybe try feeding straw instead of hay. I think 1300 lbs is a realistic goal for a typical Shorthorn steer.

Well actually cowcrazy I have been showing cattle for about 3 years in 4H now lol. My dad said that since I've worked hard with my crossbreds, I can get a shorthorn! I like this breed because they are pretty and the kids seem to enjoy showing them. I will enclose a pic of my steer. I'm not for sure who his dam is. All I know is that he was born in feb. He is going to be brought to my place in a couple of weeks. Please tell me your honest opinion about him! I thought he was great when I looked at him. He had all of the great traits! Also if you guys know of any shorthorn shows or any open shows in Indiana this next coming year I would appreciate it! I know I will be showing at the Hoosier Beef Congress and my County Fair.. maybe even state fair. It depends on how this guy turns out! So please give me your opinions and advice! I appreciate it!!!

He looks really good! I like his neck, clean front and appears to have plenty of muscle. I think you will do well with him! (clapping)
