could somebody please explain to me the point of only letting 50% or greater show in shorty plus classes @ say...naile?  i mean...if the association will give you a set of papers on an animal less than 50%, why wont they let you show that animal?  ???

I'm not sure who determines what a shorty plus is for what show because shortys aren't my breed.

But lets pretend I've never heard of or seen a shorthorn plus before. If someone asked me what one was I would say its a shorthorn plus some other breed. It would have to have a significant % of shorthorn because its the base for the breed name. 50% or greater is the majority so its shorthorn plus ______. Say you've got a shorthorn plus with papers but its 25% shorty, 55% simmi, and 20% angus. Would you call it a simmi plus or a shorty plus bc the shorthorn association will let you register it.

p.s. I don't know what the registration requirements are so my numbers may be incorrect. It's also getting late so I may just be thinking about things too hard.

The idea is that you will breed up and instead of down. I didnt set through the entire discussion back 3 years ago at the national meeting. I believe this rule became official in 2010??

I know each state or non pace show can do as they please? Check Linnette- you might be able to sell a lower percentage shorty in a sale like OBE??

When I proposed Shorthorn Plus show/Durham red show to Michigan Shorthorn breeders in 2006- that was the decision the board made back them, I felt it was a good one.

It also would avoid people using a red hided Purebred Maine Anjou which is registered as 3/4 Shorthorn from being bred to a non Shorthorn and then being shown in the Shorthorn Plus show with virtually no Shorthorn blood in them. Not complaining about he Maine Anjou entry percentage into the Shorthorns, of course.  ;)

I got the same answer that Sue got when I asked. We are in a situation with a heifer we bought that we can show her in GA as a Plus if we want or a Chi but can't show her as a Plus at NAILE but can as a Chi. There's pros and cons to this breed up deal - on one hand you protect the shorty breed by keeping the percentages up and on the other you are keeping some pretty good cattle out of the plus shows as well as cutting off another avenue for shorty blood to be used by a wider range of people.

:)  @ linnettejane , Just so you know since you thought I might be changing colors on you all, all my cows are bred to have shorty or shorty plus calves - just got in a situation where we sold shorty and shorty plus calves and didn't need to show against them. just not good business IMHO I still bleed red, white, and roan  :)
