What can you tell me about this bull. What does he work best on etc...  I've seen pictures of some of his calves. I'd like to see a picture of him (cannot find one). What's his TH/PH status. CJC

good luck on finding a picture.

he's PHA,TH free.

he's dead now.

with sooner, you are later rather than sooner.

probably works best on cows who don't have performance records.

http://maine-anjou.weaveyourwebdreams.com/breed/pedigree.asp?RegNo=331256

he's a combo of red alert and a great cow on the top to inject some milk hopefully, times a pretty bull (legacy plus) times a maternal bull (draft pick) who can be coarse.

probably a serendipitous animal.  a worthy effort though.  judging from pedigree and where things are and how recent they are, probably not consistent and breeds to the cow.

to me, he's a phenotypically, rather than a pedigreed bred bull.

not saying good or bad either way.

maybe the most interesting animal in his pedigree, is the cow back there in hopley's show time out of the ferraine cow.

usually it works like this for semen that isn't listed.

you call the owners up and they decide whether to give you any or not.

i can't remember for sure, but i think i've seen it for sale once or twice somewhere.

since you would eventually would want to sell offspring from him, some owners like some control over who he gets bred to.

various strategies are employed to insure this, such as price, certificates, not listing the semen, selling shares, only selling live animals, so you can presift the quality that the public sees etc.

to me, one of the funniest ads i've seen is one where the bull has got to be the pencilist gutted bull i've ever seen, but he's out of a good bull, so he's got to be good.  another bull out another good bull is step backed so severly i can't believe he wasn't cut before he was all the way out.

there's probably nothing worse than seeing an ad for a son of your limited sales bull that just totally sucks and is essentially using your name.

i guess this is a similar strategy to asking for payment to watch a sale.

There is no picture of the bull. He is clean of defects, and getting semen is very hard. Like so many things it comes down to who you know. I am a fan of the Sooner calves and the added rib and center body they seem to posses vs. a lot of Maines. He does get bred to the best though so it's hard to gauge. I would still love to try him though. This is partly why I jumped at the chance to buy HAA Contender (syndicated bull) semen at the Nelson dispersal...it really wasn't expensive though...and I have yet to figure out why????

half of it was because after hartman found out he was postive he shipped him to the salebarn. And you bought a share of him he let you have more semen for next to nothing. He just wanted to get rid of it.

Contender is a good bull. There are clean sons of him out there. You can buy Contender semen on the open market fairly easily.

So anybody else ever get that "wanna get away feeling"??  :-\

Damn, I really like the Contender calves. Honestly I don't think the PHA should be the death of a bull, if we just get rid of all our carriers the gene pool is that much smaller for everyone. It really makes no sense when you can breed it out of them over time.

What do you guys think of the Contender calves you have seen?

All you have to do to find out everything you want to know about SLC Sooner is talk to Charley Long.  Sooner Land & Cattle, along with Bushy Creek Farm are having a Sale March 28th in Wynnewood, OK.  Call Travis Scott at 405-238-0403.  If he can't answer your questions, he can put you into contact with Charley.

I really like contenders, we flushed a cow to him a couple of years ago we had Champion AOB bull at the new mexico state fair with one and kept the heifer for a cow. We have more coming this spring. hope their heifers or clean bulls. I don't think they would make good steers.

It's on page 4 in the Voice. The ad says 200 units but maybe he upped it?
