So i am going to show for the first time but i need help...

i will be showing my first steer this summer at our county fair and i have no idea what i will need.  i really want to know what all i need to get to pack my showbox. like brands that you use and love.  and what are some things that i could do without. like do i really need a dryer?  i also want to know what all i should do to take care of him at the show.  he has to stay on the grounds for the whole fair so i need to know there what i need to bring.  also could you write the steps to useing the different products?  i know i am asking a lot but i am only 15 and this is my first time and i cant find anything on the internet.    thank you so much!  any other helpful info is amazing to! ???  i have just been brushing him every time i work with him, should i be doing more?

ok so i am doing this as a FFA project but i am kinda on my own. i am working with the owner of the farm he is staying at, i rent here because i live in town, and he has clippers but not much else. i will be showing in the next few years so i wouldnt mind buting some supplies. i have about 6 weeks till the show.

Sullivan's products are really good.  I agree you do really need a good blower.  Many of the local Sullivan dealers will have refurbished ones.  As far as products you are you talking about show day only?  Have you been using certain products at home? 

For show day preperation we use the following items:  a good pair of clippers with a blocking or super blocking blade.  We use only a light oil (not Final Bloom - that's too heavy) at the fair.  If you use too heavy of an oil the hair can get too sticky.
Sullivans Prime Time Adhesive, Sullivan's Ultra Touch Up and then the Black Touch Up to cover (well if your steer is black).  Then you need a product such as Hocus Pocus or EZ ALL to remove the product after the show.  I hope that helps.

Call or email Sullivan's and ask if they have any used blowers.  They seem to usually have some on hand.

It sounds like you have not be taught what to do, is this a 4-H or FFA project.  If it is your leader or advisor should be able to help you a bit,  try to find someone by you to help show you,

you need to start rinsing him everyday and wash him once a week.  you should start this ASAP. 

You need to blow his hair forward after you rinse him.  before fair he needs to be clipped,  (talk to your leader, breeder or another child who has been in beef around you for guidence)

Katie are you going to show at a haired show or a slick sheered show? That could make a big difference in what you may need. Are you going to keep on showing? If I were you and if you only have one head to deal with, could you find a friend with a blower that you may could borrow along with the use of a clippers. It may work better if you asked a person from a neighboring county if you could use theirs  if their fair is on a different time schedule. Just some thoughts to possibly save you some $$s until you can get a feel for which way the wind blows.

I have always told our 4-h kids that the best way to learn is watch. If there are any shows in your area before your fair just go and watch the people fit their animals. Good ones to watch are the ones with the top animals.

I think once I get my own place, I'm gonna try to put on a couple "boot camps" a year. Get a few local kids that want to show to come out for a week and learn what it takes to show these things right.  We kinda did it once when a classmate of mine showed a steer with us one summer. I really enjoy teaching younger people how this business works.
