ok it has been a while back but when we were checkign on our cows in nebraska. The kraye's said they had just got done spayding their heifers. so they would gain a little better in the feed lot. seriously would the few more pounds really be worth it?? what do you think

One of the reasons to spay heifers is so that they don't go into heat - heifers in heat tend to walk back and forth instead of eat - they vocalize more, do more jumping on each other, and generally use more energy doing things that result in decreased weight gain - in addition they eat less - figure they do this every 21 days and the difference in wieght can be significant. Spaying at $2 per head is a small investment for the gain.  For example if they gain an extra 100 pounds the price is one dollar a pound that is $100 per head. I am sure somebody can do a better  and more real life ob with the math - but you get the idea ;D

If you had one heifer to be spayed it would cost you more - but out west there are vets that basically spay heifers for a living and are so good and so quick they can do them in minutes at a really low cost per animal....

600 pound heifer = $2 to spay (weather might be hot, raining, dusty, and the heifer might not WANT to be spay)

40 pound dog = $80 to spay (might be a bit fat, heavy to lift on the stainless steel table, nice climate controlled surgery room!)

10 pound cat = $45 to spay (small, climate controlled surgery room, and probably an assistant to "help")

How does the procedure work on heifers?  Where is the incision made at, etc?  Local anesthetic?

If they are doing it that quick I'm just curious as to the process.

I guess my dogs are whimps, but they usually lay around for a couple of days.

What I understand from the feedlot vets is that if you can't spay them for $2 or less it is cheaper to use MGA

I gather most heifers are spayed via the vaginal route - here is a web site that explains one technique

$80.00 bucks is cheap to spay a dog, that is less then a neuter for a boy dog.

Here in Colorado try $125.00 small dog  $150.00 Medium  $200.00 for big dog  to spay.

$100.00 small $125.00 medium and $150.00 large for a neuter.

Why even  spay your barn cats because they are like $75.00 to spay and $45.00 to neuter then they get eaten by a owl.  (we hosted a spay clinic where it cost $10.00 for a spay or neuter for cats)  This is where I found out that I need to go back to cat sexing school because Ney Ney is actually a boy and not a girl.

Best way to neuter tom cats is with a shotgun.  Just joking.

When I was out dove hunting last weekend I couldn't figure out what the awful smell was till I realized it was me.  I'd left my bird bag in a corner of the garage all year and realized the neighbor's tom cat had been in my garage a bunch and he had pee'd all over it all year.  The hotter I was the worse it stunk.  Said bag is in the trash.  Said tom cat has been put on notice.

I have been wittness to neutering your own cat on more then one occasion.......


1st time you put twine around front arms of cat, stuff cat in pvc tube so cat can not move, hold down pipe while holding twine on front legs taunt, the other unlucky souls that were coherced into helping held a back leg each with twine, then the cutter cuts them like you would a pig. Apply some brown bottle lysol and turn loose.

The second time was not as easy and I actually have the scars to prove it. (I must be really dumb or something since I have been talked into helping 2 times.  )) )
Get rug roll front end of cat and back legs of cat tightly in rug, then cut like a pig put betadine on it, let go of rug and run like HEdouble hocky sticks...... Cat was REALLLLLYYYYY mad.

Ney Ney is to cute to torture like that so I took him to the clinic...  ;D

Ya I agree...... I could tell you other things that this person did that.....well used to make me really angry. Like when she decided that she did not like a dog any more she would simply shoot it. He answer to everything sick or injured was brown bottle lysol, claims it saved a horse that had been cut to the bone & was severly infected. Dont know what ever happened to her. I was a kid when she was around.
