Ok folks-looking for a heifer bull...and his BW EPD is -6.  Do any of you have any experience with him?  Is he a pretty solid easy calver?  Thanks for any information!

DLB,

There is a pretty long thread on here somewhere about Grandmaster.  I think it might be about what Simmental bulls are hot now.  You will find some who are unsure about Grandmaster b/c his numbers came way down in this years Sire Summary, but I have never heard of calving trouble with him but his calves are great.  I think you will be pleased.

I posted this same question a while back about Grandmaster calves and the age old calf shape question , check it out . If i remember correctly everyone said he does calve easily and around 30 days of age is when the calves really take off and get thick . I went ahead and bred my purebred simmy heifers to him this year , but i did my homework first and did alot of asking around , on here and locally .

I have a daughter out of him that the previous owner said came easy.  I will be breeding some heifers to him this fall.

I don't think you can go wrong with Grandmaster, there are other calving ease simmi's but Grandmaster is a solid choice and one of the better proven ones for heifers. Good Luck

The handful of Grandmasters that we have came fine...however, they are just calves out in the pasture...not coming to the top like I had hoped that they would.  They look like they will be decent, but seem to lack style.  Also, not overly soft-made.

Just exactly what bulls do you like there Husky?

And how does it feel to move to another conference and suddenly have the best team?  ;)

We had two grandmasters out of first calf heifers.  Both calved easily and the calves are doing great. We are using him again this year.

We used him on a first calving shorthorn heifer who had been shown up to a month before calving and was fat. Calf came out fine, a bit slow starting and is really nice now. Thick, thick, thick and sound. He added belly, leg set and muscle for us but made the calf a tick plainer than his dam. (Which i would expect breeding a simmy to a shorty. :)

little coarser...not the best pic, but it said the profile of him was too large to load.

Gonewest...bulls that I have confidence in are (in no particular order)  Dream On, Steel Force, Built Right, Upgrade and In Dew Time.  Used Invasion a little (won't make them pretty).  Used some Trademark, Beefmaker, Ammo and Shock & Awe also.  Used more Angus then ever on the simms...BC Lookout, Final Answer, Pioneer, Bismark and Conneally Thunder.

Football....just hope we win a couple!

Built Right is probably our number 1 CE choice for a Simm.  Grandmaster will certainly work for calving ease too, but I'm disappointed in their style.  There are still good things about them, though.  I've been contemplating going back and using some SS Goldmine on heifers.  He calved very easy, and his daughters are doing an excellent job raising calves.  Only thing that I don't like about him is that his mother was just a plain, little cow...not overly impressive.

You will get along fine with Grandmaster; just a couple additional thoughts!

What would you recommend for Built Right 1st calf heifers? These are from Angus 1st calf heifers(1/2 bloods) I figure you have some 1st hand experience in this scenario. Had thought about Trademark as there is an awesome BR x Trademark that has done a lot of winning here in Iowa. Also thought about Grandmaster. I always appreciate your comments.

Grandmaster was the bull that I thought would fill that void; a calving ease mating for Dream On pedigrees (Built Right, Steel Force, In Dew Time, etc.)

Trademark would be an obvious mating that we use on many  Dream On family decendants, but I wouldn't recommend him on Built Rights, as they are both out of Ebony Antoinette.  The majority of the Built Rights that we have bred as heifers have been ai'd Angus.  It's a challenge to find an outcross bull to nail it.  Assuming that you want to breed them back Simmental?

I've got a growth bull picked out that is making them right, but haven't found the sure bet calving ease bull yet for the Built Rights.

We've used Invasion with decent success on heifers, though many of the same negatives come up with Invasion as we've seen with Grandmaster.

We used Grizzly on a SOS x Emblazon first calf heifer.  Had a 67# heifer calf, it's the best calf I have really clean fronted and soggy bellied.  A couple of my buddies used him also on first calf heifers and are very happy with the outcome calves came small and are really growing.

Thanks-will definitely consider that. There are not many calving ease options that fit what I want that are not related to Built Right. And I thought this was only a problem in the club calf world (lol)
