My son's steer started limping 2 wks. ago.  Limped for a couple of days, then got better for a few days, then went back to limping again.  Took him to the vet last week.  He checked all four feet and decided he was only sore on his right front, and was sure it was the foot/hoof area.  No apparent swelling.  He did not think it was hoof rot, because there was no smell.  He gave us some bute to give him for 4 or 5 days.  No improvement.  Still limping.  Yesterday the vet gave us more Bute and a dose of excede.  Our show is not until end of February, but I am worried about this.  Any thoughts from the sp experts??

I would just not work with him until he walks better, he may have been stepped on or stepped on something

(angel)  Hopefully it is just like a stone bruise on the sole.  My horses get those all of the time when they don't have shoes on.  Keep me updated!!  Lisa

I was thinking that or either an abscess.  It's obviously very painful to him b/c when we reach down around his ankle to feel for swelling or heat, he will pull it away immediately.  I will try soaking in epsom salt too.  Thanks for the replies!

Maybe try Blue Kote by Dr. Naylor. Try cleaning the hoof as much as he'll let you and spray some of that on there. My steer was limping a day or so after I got him, just gave him some aspirin for pain and sprayed that on his hoof and he's doing much better. Only thing is it is purplish blue in color, so if your steer is white by his hoof, I don't know how long it'd take to wash out....comes off my fingers within two days or so...  ;D

It wouldn't hurt to treat the calf for foot rot just in case. 5mls/100lbs LA-200, plus 1 sulfa bolus/300lbs. It is a good cheap treatment protocol.

two years ago had a cow that started limping. Got worse. Took to OSU. They did an X-Ray and wrapped her hoof and in matter of twenty four hours they were able to pull out a stone that had been encapsulated. Her's had worked it s way up to her coronet band. I would suggest further investigation if it doesn't get better.

Will the Excede work the same as LA-200?
