He was our judge at the big E this year and what an awesome guy  ;D no matter what any one brought in he gave everyone a complement on their calves which gave a lot of inspiration. For someone as great in this business as he is, he didn’t snob anyone, and he was great with the kids. The best part was his end speech where he basically said, no matter what the times look like he would cut back on other things so him and his family could keep doing this and so should we. One great judge.

Great family, kids and calves. The ability to overlook that great little prospect that has hair out the wazoo and to be able to judge what a calf will feed to 1350 lbs. will look like is a gift that very few have on a consistant level. Think back and see how many have won the same shows as KY, with different steers in different years. Steve Bonham's niece I believe has done that and Stetson Copus has done that, along with Ft. Worth,Houston,San Antonio,San Angelo and the Texas State Fair I believe.

Didn't Ryan Rash do something similar with the National Western, Ft Worth, San Antonio, and Houston one time?

Thousands of people take care of them just like the families that continually do so well. There are few, if any secrets anymore. But no matter how well you feed, how well you care, how well you clip and fit, you can't make chicken salad from chicken poopie at that level. The ability to be able to pick calves and the resources to have multiple finished animals to choose from is what separates contenders at that level.

Everyone of you know people who can fit and clip at a superior level. The woods are full of them. I dare say almost everyone here knows how to care for a calf on a  daily basis. Bet the vast majority could on their own or have access to help that can help them feed one as well as anyone else. What these people have is the ability and more importantly, the experience to be able to pick calves from a young age that will win at the highest level.

And btw, that calf from AL was maybe skinny the day he was born, but not many days since then.

I think that are exactly correct about what you have said. The biggest difference with most of us and those that seem to win consistently is that they have the discipline and determination to do all that it takes to win "EVERYDAY". I am sad to admit that there are days when we, I, would let things slide. It is a sad fact too that there are fewer & fewer PPL that can really look @ a calf and read it well as to what it may become. It is chronicled every year with the calves that come on later & where do all of the great early powerhouses go?

There are multiple kids that have won all of the Texas majors - Ryan Rash, Morgan Moylan (I think, but can't remember if she ever got Fort Worth), the Copus kid, and others going way back.

In each case, the family might have had fitters (if they weren't fitters themselves), but those kids were right in the middle of everything.  Nobody was doing all the work for them.

As TMJ and other have said, the trick is knowing what will be a good calf in the end, not what looks the best as a little furball baby.

And a whole lot of us know what to do, the list is a lot of shorter of those who actually can put the time in to do it - with multiple calves.

My question about Rash was tongue in cheek because technically he didn't win those shows.

The Naitonal Western is the only one he was ever actually DQ'd from.  There were rumors of of other issues, but I don't think they were ever anything but.  The fact he has since judged at more than few of them since then should tell you about the validity of those rumors.  There's always been rumors about every kid that has won more than one.  Don't really think it warranted being brought up here.

On the original subject I've never once heard a negative rumor about Stierwalt.

Feeding is huge...  There are not very many people that are good feeders.  I'm not one either.

It takes a special talent in order to feed a steer, get him fine tuned and whatever else it takes to be 12 oclock on show day.  The people that can do this are the ones that dominate.

Call me old fashioned but just the idea of fitters working for what are supposed to be juniors makes realize just how little value is placed on hard work with today's youth.

pretty sure MOST of the calves you see fitted at shows arent done by the kid, they stand around doing nothing. Some people dont even show up at the show intell 10min before the show and grap the halter and lead the calf. i could go on and on about this but im not. I work with my calves about everyday by myself. At shows i have people help me fit but im still down there helping them.
