can you have scurs done?  what is the key to keep them from growing back?  and who is the best at doing this in the tri-state region (se ohio, ne ky, sw wv)?
have removed scurs from my shorty plus heifer, but they came back... ...want them removed for good!

FWIW, if you have her registered as polled you are supposed to leave them on.

We had scurs removed from a alias calve and the vet did a real good job and they didn't grow back.

she does have polled on her papers, because when we sent in the papers she didnt have anything(downfall to registering calves so early i guess)..they never popped out until she was just over 6 months old.....i never even thought of that until you just mentioned it...could i get it changed on her papers to scurred?

To be able to prove to someone she is scurred & not horned , you would have to leave them on. Once you remove them , there is no way to tell if you descurred (if a word) her or dehorned her.That's why you have to register them as horned, if they are removed.

hmmm...there isnt scurred in shorthorns or plus'  when registereing them,  is there?
 
she is out of a purebred  scurred red maine bull that was also registered 3/4 shorthorn...and a purebred polled cow...she's actually double registered short plus (7/8) and maintainer (1/2)...ugh...this is a mess...so the correct thing to do is to have her changed to horned on the plus papers and scurred on the maine papers and then no problems removing them? 

i really want them removed (plan on showing her this summer) and to have the papers state the correct thing...i dont plan on selling her, but do want to have accurate records, when we are done showing her, i will be breeding her to purebred shorts, which will give me purebred calves and will keep any heifers to add to my herd and i want their records to be accurate as well...

I'm not an expert on this, just the way I understand it. Yes , there is a scurred(which is technically polled) on the pedigree , it's just to register them that way you have to leave them on . If you cut them off the only way for someone to tell the difference between one that has had scurs cut off & horns cut off ,would be to x-ray them. So if you're not going to sell her then it won't hurt to cut them off. But talk to the ASA & double check me, they may have changed something & forgot to tell me.

I'm pretty sure a correction on a paper costs $ 5 - shouldn't be a big deal to change her to horned.

Just have em taken off and if you ever are going to sell her just be honest and say she was scurrred.  I wouldn't worrry about changing the papers.  A lot of show animals have their heads opened up if nothing else just to shape them a little even if they don't have scurs or horns.

Like Dusty said... I normally have all my steers and heifers heads shaped. Even if they are polled or not, it really shapes them up and can make a pretty head look beautiful. Just what I do.

Our vet has what he calls a cosmetic dehorning and a regular dehorning. The cosmetic, he gives them a block and sedates them. Opens the head and shapes the poll. Regular they just burn or cut them out with no shaping of the head etc.

We ussually do them about weaning the earlier the better the smaller the hirn base the better it seems to come out

My Vet did our head shaping one year for $75. He does awesome work! Never could even tell he did anything. I don't know about the paperwork thing tho, we just had a club calf( crossbred) for my daughter.

Dr. Steve Schwandt of Guthrie Vet clinic of Guthrie, Oklahoma is about as good as it gets for cosmetic dehorning, in the southwest area. I don't believe he shapes heads as some I have heard of,but as far as cutting horns or scurs and surgically sewing he is as good as you can find. I think my brother told me he still charges 25.00 pr head.Same price as he charged 15 years ago.Bonham showsteers are done by a fella that comes up from Texas. When he is done they look like they were always polled. Not sure what he charges though.
