My niece has a yearling that she personally has worked with since February. She did great until she got trampled at our Preview Show by two different calves (neither of them were hers and they had just gotten away from the exhibitors). Since then, she has had trouble slowing her heifer down and staying in front of her. She lost her twice in the ring at Junior Nationals and has lost her a few times at home. Although, last weekend at our county fair, the heifer got spooked by a tractor as she was headed up to the showring and ran all the way back to the barn. We got her caught and had my niece lead her back to the showring. We showed her how to put all of her weight into pulling her back and taught her that she has to show the heifer that she(my niece)'s the boss. Since that moment, she has done WONDERFUL with her and received special recognition in showmanship for the outstanding job she's been doing all day. We explained to her that the most important thing to do is remain calm so the heifer trusts her.
