I was deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Gene McDonald. I always enjoyed talking to Geno and listening to the stories he had to tell. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. (angel) (angel)
Geno will be missed. He was a great promoter of the Shorthorn breed and he had many great stories of his life and travels from a lifetime in the breed. Gene was a guy who told it like it is. I remember a few years ago, when he was working for Shorthorn Country, he visited a breeder who had been running full page full color ads in the magazine for several issues. Geno told him that the bull he was promoting was the poorest bull he had ever seen. The advertising stopped. I wonder why! All Gene said was that he could not allow the genetics from that bull to be propogated any more in the breed. He was a true friend and he was one of the good ones we meet in our lives.
I, too, will miss Gene. It's fun to talk with people that have such a fondness, and a memory, for Shorthorn cattle. I will always treasure the column he wrote in Shorthorn Country about the sale we had 10 years ago.
