theoretical situation in buying a new car N/C

Lets say you had some money and were looking for a new car? With all the termoil in the car industry and the billions of dollars being giving away, then GM still having to file Chapter 11 does this make you more or less willing to buy from them if you were looking for a new car? Would the great deals bring you to their dealerships ordoes their mismanagement just sour you to their company? Or would you look to foreign and why? Frosty

ive been thinking about this alot lately too...and decided at this point i will only buy ford...they havent taken the bailout...yet...and this is coming from someone who was raised in a family who has had nothing but chevy's since my grandfather...and my well-do-to uncle who used to threaten to write us out of his will if we didnt buy chevy...which he has also since changed his mind since the bailout...

Interesting question. If you buy a Chevy are oil changes going to be like standing in line at the Post Office? My brother in-law is a GM of a local Chevy dealership so I will report back with some more info. BTW they didn't get a "letter" from GM. Good news for him. I think if I had to buy a truck tomorrow i would buy a Ford.

I've always driven Fords. I have nothing against Chevy - just like Fords better.

I bought a new Dodge truck Friday afternoon.  I've loved my Fords, but I believe in dealing with my local, small town dealership.  My old hometown had a Ford dealership, my wife's (where we now live) has GM/Chrysler.  They buy at our county fair, so they get my business.  I figured vehicles have hit their cheapest point.

They survived both cuts.  He told me most of the ones getting whacked sold less than 100 vehicles per year.  He also told me that the core business lines won't go away from any of the makers.

No, my decision will be based on the value of the vehicle, or essentially most quality and reliability for my dollar.    Being able to get warranty work done locally would also be a factor.

I am not concerned about the fact that GM or some others may go into bankruptcy. I think someone will pick up the pieces and carry on.I will buy on basis of value and best deal, no matter what financial situation they are in.

In some ways, I think it may be a wake up call for a lot of people if GM does go down. I have been listening to some of the Union bosses talk lately about the concession negotiations that are presently being conducted. The Canadian government told GM that they would not advance the promised bailout money unless GM was able to get major concessions with their Union, by last Friday. It did not happen but I think the government agreed to an extension. As far as I am concerned I certainly hope that they hold both sides to this. The Union guys I see on TV make me angry and also make me sick. Talk about a bunch that feel the world owes them big time. Sorry, my heart is pumping pure porcupine pee for them. I do think that Unions do have a role, but like most things, most of them are way out of line. Some days I would love to see some one tell them to pound sand and send them all packing. Maybe then some would wake up and smell the coffee.

You said it well, JIT---I agree with you wholeheartedly!!    It amazes me that the union--who was a major part of the financial problem with these companies--gets to come to the front of the line when the goods are handed out in the Chrysler bankruptcy!!  What the heck will a union accomplish with a major ownership interest in one of these companies.  Apparently, the term "Conflict of Interest" has no meaning to the Obama administration--or maybe they just changed it to a more PC friendly phrase that I haven't learned yet!! JMHO

i read a review on the ford 250 and up.  they have a warranty of 5 years 60k.  i think dodges have 100k.  don't know what chevy is.
