Wondering how good of luck you guys have had with Fixted time AI on heifers. Don't have much time to watch for heats, so this is about my only option. Was going to give Cystorelin on Day 0 with a CIDR, and then 7 days pull CIDR and give Lute. Then 54 hours later +/- 2 hours breed them. Any thoughts?

Karlton,

We only did it on three cows this year, but had 100% on them, so it worked out awesome. We had bred these three once on natural heats and it didnt take, so we did the fixed time AI. This is the first year we did it, but it worked out great. I like to breed on natural heats though.

we have used timed AI on more than one ocasion... For us, it worked quite well- and we never used any cidrs.. just lut...  While I was away at school, mom and dad can't do AI work.. So they would give lut, then I beleive 7 days later, give 2nd shot of lut...  this was to be on a Thur...  I would come home from school on Fri- and we would heat check all day Fri, Sat & Sun... Breed when in heat.. If not showing any heat signs, I would breed before leaving on Sun afternoon headed back to school...

This seemed to work out really well...  Doing the AI work myself, we'd run 70-80% conception rates...  depends on # of cows mainly- actually, I had the best conception rates on the timed cows, rather than the heat checked cows- most of the time...

I'd have to look up the exact time periods to give the shots... But I remember the last shot came on a Thur.. so I could come home Fri night...

This is the only way that we can AI, using CIDR and Lute. We live where we can't see our cows and heifers on a daily right out of window situation. We have a really good take of our heifers and a good take on cows.

We have only been able to AI a few cows without the CIDR's because it just so happenend that when we were setting up the first batch of cows/heifers, they were riding on of the cows. She took, thankfully.

We have done this protical for aobut 8 yrs now, and have had about an 80-85% take on all. We also do all our AI'ing, no vet or AI tech to do it for us, we live to far out of the way.

We time AI heifers every fall that are 12-14 months old that have been developed on grass and get around 50% stuck on groups of 50-60.

we did 3 heifers and got 2 of them stuck... the one that didn't stick was way too fat though, so the AI guy said she probably wouldn't stick.
