Hey I have a shorthon steer that I'm showing at the end of July/August for our county fair.  We had our county weigh-in today and he weighed 1,000 even. He was one of the biggest there. We are feeding one five gallon bucket and a half at morning and night.  the ration is a mix with prolly 2/3 corn with molasses, cotton seed, barley, etc.He also has a small heifer with him eating the food.  Should I keep feeding the same amount? Less? I just don't want to get him too big.

Are steers I always wanted around that at weigh in. I would  back off to a 5 gallon morning and evening, or get him to 1200lb then feed him barley base to finish him off at 1300lb. I had a calf weigh 1300 in may and we showed mid to the end of july. We had to turn him out for a couple weeks on grass then just feed him filler stuff and heifer feed mixed. Weighed 1400lb, shrunk him to 1250lb which i didn't think could happen, then filled him back up and he looked awesome. Won Grand Champion with him, gave him cranberry juice to shrink him down.

If he has a small heifer in with him she might need to be on a little different ration. You can slow him down by putting him on a growth ration decrease the amount of feed and corn. Picture would be great. I will say we always try to get ours up to weight because the summers are hard on them.

How old is your steer? Do you have idea his ADG?

Alot easier to holdem than pushem. Keep feeding him till he reaches 1400lb. than go with a barley ration to reverse his wt. and keep condition.
