Stick about 6-8 Aspirin(not acetaminophen) in his mouth and hold closed until he has swallowed.  Wait 1/2 hour, and see if he walks better. We had a heifer once that was the same way.  The Aspirin did the trick, every time.

I'll admit, up front, that I have used phenylbutazone in cattle - and while it is not an approved drug, it is allowed, extra-label, except in dairy cattle over 20 months of age - if other drugs are not effective for the desired purpose.  But there are some fairly well-defined steps and documentation that must be followed and written down.  As it is not an 'approved' drug, there is no established meat or milk withdrawal - so, even if we follow 'accepted' extrapolated withdrawal times, there may be animals that still have violative residues if they go to slaughter, and everyone - veterinarian, owner, trainer, handler, processor needs to be on the same page.  If residues are detected, FDA will be tracing back to find a 'responsible party'.

As the veterinarian, I'd better have documented, in writing, my reasons for prescribing a non-approved drug for extra-label use, as well as the dose and frequency I prescribe - and the meat/milk withdrawal time.  And those recommendations better reflect the AMDUCA/ELDU/FARAD recommendations and algorithm.  If not, FDA's gonna nail me.  However, if the owner, handler, or whoever, does not follow my written instructions(provided that they are correct), FDA's gonna rake them over the coals.

Requirements and allowances for shows...I have no knowledge on this subject.  If you use a banned substance and testing detects it, I presume that you pay the price.

Now, as to bute in food animals - cattle in particular;  yes, I used it, years ago, on rare occasions - like on heifers down with obturator paralysis after a difficult delivery, etc., but would not do it today.  Sure, that client may swear, "She's a pet, Doc; I'll never sell her!" but, people will lie to you - and sometimes folks die, and the surviving family disperses those animals with or without any knowledge of what drugs have been used.

It should be noted that the year this happened, the champ animals were all displayed out under a tent where everyone at the fair could walk right up to the animals. I stood at that steers pen and was within a foot of him, and I saw no one around supervising the dozens of people under that tent. Just saying that tampering does happen. The next year they changed things and now the animals are displayed indoors and are monitored by security around the clock. And as far as I am aware, this issue did end up in court after the aforementioned article was published and while they did forfeit the check, the state fair did make some concessions.

Will that help the swelling go down too? We are thinking its not OCD since he is still getting around and it been a  few weeks and has actually gotten a little bit smaller so maybe it is an injury... but im still using the Bute 5 days on and 5 days off and stopping use a month before fair he is also on glucosimine...

No doubt...although they'd prolly be using somethin like Tren to do that
