I have a coming yearly heifer out of a PB Hereford cow and a PB (small framed) OCC Angus Bull.  I have read all the posts about breeding these type of cows for Show Steers and Performance cattle.  Normally, I use easy calving AI Angus Bulls on my heifers.  I do not want to make the resulting calf to small.

What A.I. breed, and which A.I. bull should I use on this virgin heifer for her first calf?  Goal would be to make a live, born unassisted, replacement female.

Thanks,

Pacesetter would be a great choice. Hybred vigor will be amazing. I used In Dew Time for a flush on a hereford x angus heifer and them resulting heifers are some of the best ones I have ever raised.

We have a pacesetter and a shear force;  love them both! Both were out of first calf heifers, and are heifers that are due to calf this spring (the pacesetter is AI'd to Amigo and the Shear Force is AI'd to Dominator). Both calf's were born unassisted and had/have great bone! The pacesetter heifer was shown by my daughter on the cow as cow calf pair (were 7th at Nationals in Indiana) and the heifer won lots last year as a bred yearling. The pacesetter took to her first AI date, the Shear Force took to her second AI date. I would use him again; very maternal females...

Rocking Horse Tailor Made!  Select Sires angus bull that is incredibly under-valued and under-utilized.  I calved over 40 heifers to him last winter and have 50+ more comin next month.  I love em, they come way easy (60 - 75 pounds) 100% unassisted, didnt even see a heifer calve.  The heifers out of him are super-broody, big ribbed high capacity females with good looks and excellent dispositions, the bulls are all sold already and the steers flat grow!  No-brainer here man, the choice is simple.  Extra good for semen quality too and he should also add milk.

Good suggestion! I remember a conversation I had with you about Blevins Raindance. Would he work here? Is he to small?

Trev,
I don't think I would use Raindance for a sure-fire heifer bull.  I never have used him on heifers but know for a fact that Wayne Blevins has without any kind of problems.  If you knew every Raindance calf was going to be a heifer, I would say go for it. But I have had some of the bulls out of Raindance come out pretty stout and chunky.  Great cattle, just scares me a little on heifers.  Yeah he is a -2 on CED!  Wow I think that is way off but whatever, just another EPD that I have a hard time putting any stock into! LOL
