I was wondering if anyone has drilled triticale to graze and/or hay. I am in western Kansas. I have never tried it before. We have had an obscene amount of rain this year. I was going to try 89 acres of dryland. I was thinking you were supposed to plant in August. As I understand it...early planting is not a problem cause it is not susceptible to mosaic? If you had moisture....why couldn't you plant it in July. I thought it would be good for weaned calves to graze on mainly and possible pairs next May....with the option to hay it. This is probably an insane idea with 5 $ wheat I don't know. Thanks in advance.

I've planted it up here in west nebraska, winter kills alot easier than rye the reason i quit.  But if you can get by that you will have a hard time finding enough cattle to throw on it in the spring.  Unbelievable tonage or aum's.

I have planted triticale fgor years. I have opted to bite the bullet and spend the money on beardless triticale the last five years. The seed is more expensive and you can't harvest the seed due to the patent on it but the hay  crop is  better due to no beards. grazing is phenomenal and the tonnage is unbeatable. I live in the panhandle of Okla under dryland conditions

Do you guys have any problems with grass tetany grazing triticale with lactating cows?  What precautions do you take if it is a problem?

It's grown somewhat in our area primarily as a silage crop.

Many people will seed it this spring, silage it and then graze the stubble that seems to regrow like crazy the following year.

Hey AJ,
Where are you at? I'm at Hill City! There are some people around here that do tricale all the time. I think they plant it in August or very early September and have cows on it until May! And it is dryland.

We normally plant it in august and graze it out, and then we will no-till oats into it, and let the cows graze that along with the stubble. Our neighbors plant alot of it and bale it up to grind up and add to their cow ration when wintering cows.
