What is the purpose of twitter and blogs. How is a blog different than a twitter? Is there also a tweet. I signed up for twitter and it almost doesn't make sense to do. Is this stuff kind of tied to facebook somehow?

Different

Twitter is more of an up to the minute notification system of what you are doing at that exact moment.  It is limited to a certain number of characters, I think 140 or less, so think of it as a text message.  But, instead of sending the text message to 1 person, it is posted on twitter and people can elect to follow your messages and be alerted when you type a new one.  It has caught on because people are following celebrities, athletes, etc.  Companies are now trying to harness it to market their brand.

A blog is a web log, or think of it as articles that you post, but articles can be any length and it is more like a newspaper of what you are doing.

Clear as mud, yeah?  ;D

Don't think I'll ever twitter - there is alot of the time I don't want anyone to know where I'm at or what I'm doing except a good horse. Too much technology and information is like useless E.P.D.s! RW

Don't understand the reason why someone needs to tell the whole world what they're doing at a moments notice.

usage of twitter (think of that George carlin bit with the F-word):

As a verb:

john tweeted shirley

Or as an intransitive verb:

shirley tweets

I had generally the same opinion about Twitter earlier this year.  After a while so many people who know more than me about tech stuff were so big on it that I went ahead and started using it.

If you don’t have a smart phone or a job where you are in front of a computer all day, it can seem like sort of a waste of time.  However, if you do have access to data all day, it’s much more interesting than you would think to see the updates that come through if you are following the right people.

I wish that there was a discussion board for amateur anthropologist-archeologists. I always have a question about a soil layer or terrace question, geology or whatever. I guess sometimes this wouldn't work cause professional archeologist might get an idea stolen or something. I almost wondered starting a blog of mainly questions. Someone with Texas(Canadian river knowledge might have the same question or weird artifact or whatever.

I haven't used Twitter and don't know that I will but I signed up for a Facebook account a few months ago and I must admit it is cool.  I have found people htat I haven't talked with in years.  I think you would be amazed at the people you find on there.
