We have a calf that was born about a week ago. When the calf was born the umbilical cord was cut really short to where it wasn't even showing. Now the umbilical seems a little swollen and has some hardness to it. He seems to be fine and is up walking around. Should we give him a shot of antibiotics or does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Jordan

when i was on the dairy we always dipped the ends in an iodine solution to kill anything on it and to prevent infection idk if its to late for that or not.

i would go ahead and give him an antibiotic shot ann get the vet to check it out.

sounds to me like navel ill, we had a terrible time w/ that 3 or 4 years ago.  USUALLY we just gave them an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory and kept a very close eye on it.  In extreme cases where it lead to swollen and damaged joints (front knees) we would doctor with exceede and an anti-inflammatory.
Hope this helps

Thank you for all of the responses! I'm gonna hit him with some Penicillin today and hopefully that will get it cleared up!
