A world class IVF(In Vitro Fertilization) laboratory is now open for business down the road from me in Decatur, TX. Dr. Joe Ables has teamed up with Vitrogen Genetics out of Brazil. The lab is the first for Vitrogen in the United States, and 17th lab world wide. They are providing a full service IVF service which includes ultrasound evaluations of donors and recips, aspiration of oocytes, oocyte maturation, embryo transfer, and ultrasound pregnancy check and sexing. Their donor facility is just about complete, along with recipient herds in Texas for those who want to take advantage of the guaranteed weaned calf program. The team is made up of several highly experienced embryologists from Brazil.
IVF Advantages:
Minimal hormones used on Donor cows
Ability to retrieve oocytes from donor cows that have stopped responding to normal super ovulation programs or prepubescent heifers
Oocytes can be harvested every 15 days, and can begin harvesting 15 days after calving until a donor is 6 months bred(that's right, collect eggs from bred cattle)
Multiple sires can be used to fertilize a single aspiration (typical is 10-20 oocytes)
Very high dollar semen can be used to fertilize up to 10-20 donors at one time. 100-200 eggs can be fertilized with one straw of semen
