For females and young stock, tatoo # (our herd ID #s are the same as tatoo #s) and herd prefix (since we run 3 or 4 for different family members).
For herd bulls we use their names on the front and tatoo on the back. You really can't read the tatoo # on the bulls in the pasture, but it is helpful reminder when you have them in the chute.

We put the year of birth on the top, then the sire name below that. Then the animal ID, which we use names here. On the back side is our ranch prefix, just in case one of our critters ever gets out so people know where they come from! We love the Ritchie tags  (thumbsup)
When we AI, I immediately know who the sire is so no mistakes.

I have seen many variations to the info put on an ear tag. On top left corner of the tag I put an abbreviation for the sire. ( TL for Timeline, TD for Touchdown, P for Perfection, BC for Bar Code). On the top right hand corner I put the dam's tattoo, ( eg: 43P). Along the bottom I put the calf's tattoo ( 15Z). If it is an ET calf, I write ET on the top middle of the tag and if there is room I will write the recip dam's number in the bottom right corner. I prefer not to have the tag too cluttered so once an ET calf is weaned I often replace the tag and put another tag in the calf without the recip info on it.

I really like printed tags, and the Angus association has a tag store and does a nice job with printed tags with a little extra room for information.

I started managing some cows a couple years ago, and coming into a new herd of Angus cows that I needed to get to know in a hurry was a little challenging. I like to know more about my cattle than just their number and which cow they are! I ordered these tags with the year born on the top line, the sire's name below that, and the cow's tattoo number in big numbers below that. The farm name is also across the bottom. The print is small except for the main number, but it's there and easy enough to read if you're not too far away. You can even build the tag online, fill out a spreadsheet with the information to be printed, and order the tags with just a credit card. The worst thing is that they're laser printed, so the black print isn't real black...it's more dark gray/charcoal, and it doesn't show up real good on some colors of tags. I ordered some purple tags that I ended up sending back because they were too hard to read. Orange and yellow would be good, and I've used red, white and pink. The staff will tell you the black ones don't show up real sharp, and neither do the blue, green or purple.

Here's a link if you wanna check em out...

Or go to angus.org, click Shop Online located on the left hand side of the screen, and then click on the Tag Store icon at the top right corner.
