Deeper.  Look at pics of calves that won in the 80's compared today.  They were TALL. and Before that, they were puds.  We're kind of in the middle today, with a trend toward more moderate (but still properly proportioned) animals.

Today they want them deeper.  Yet, some have used some that are "puds" due to their confusion over feeders and packers wanting smaller cattle.

Personally, I think they should use the best calf in the ring, regardless of leg or lack of it.  Many club calves grow too slow for the feeders to love in their lots.

Pretty calves are not necessarily the best finished, best marbling, best feed converter, most efficient but the goal of a cattle breeder is to produce the best of all these qualities in one animal.  A judge does not know the age of the calf or how long it was on feed, etc.  He can only judge what he likes to see and that is a well muscled animal that is not extreme in his frame.

Well...you go to bigger shows the general consensus is that the judges want a female that has some real volume.  I like the big volumed cattle as well.  Now if you go to my county fair....all bets are off.  It's hard telling what those guys want.  My point is that it doesn't take much to be a county fair judge in my area.  If you got a good one and want to get her beat then go to a county fair.  There are trade-offs.  You don't deal with politics as much at county fairs.

I think with females they like them deeper and with steers they like them moderate.

I think sometimes it is regional as well.
Our county used a 49" for champion this year. Not a bad steer but just small.
