I love fitting and playing with hair but I do believe that a slick show would be more about the quality of the calf than a Hair show.  Our county show is debating it but it would be the only slick show most of the kids would go to and many wouldn't show so they can show at the bigger ones that follow pretty closely after.  Again, I like hair but it %&*& me off when I see "great hair" etc in a bull's description...that just shouldn't be a factor and it isn't in the real world.

Our fair tried it this year in our carlot cattle show, guess what, the same people won. Its all in the feeding and care. If you don't want to deal with the hair and proper care then show pigs, lol

haha!!! (lol) i like both. its all showing to me. we do hair for prospect season and Slick at the Market shows. i also wish all judges would take the time to feel every calf

i am not trying to step on toes or anything but no fitting shows seem to appear as excuses for not knowing how to fit. the more you allow to fit the more competitive it would be, except for maybe the major shows that show slicked which is totally different.

why work so hard to have well trained hair and not be able to use it when you show?

I like the blow and go type shows...but if your talking about the amount of effort needed, I dont think it matters...its funnybut even at slick shows you can tell which calves have been washed and worked regularly and which havent...and even at slick shows its vital to have healthy skin and hair, even if there is hardly any there...the only real benefit to having slick shows in my opinion is you cant hide deffects with hair and its more fair to those good calves that just wont grow hair no matter what you do and thus look out of place at the big fitting shows.
As far as full on fitting goes...I will admit I love fitting and manipulating hair as much as any of them...but I dont find it a waste of hair to not be able to use adhesives and such...most of the blow and go's I see allow at least a light oil or show sheen...and if hair is truly "well trained" then you shouldnt need all the adhesive to make it look good...just a good blower, comb, and a sharp set of blades

I didn't vote - I'd like to see the "hair" option split into fit and blow and show.  I'm with SFASU - good quality, well trained hair and a good clip job are just as important (if not more so) in blow and show as in full fit.  I like the blow and show option myself, but if you want to fit, we'll jump right in and play.

i agree with the other posters on blow and go shows about the importance of training the hair before hand. I find it silly that most people who don't want to learn how to fit just scream for blow and gos when in fact, the kids whose calves are maxed out will 9 times out of 10 have better trained hair and a better clip job which gives them an even bigger advantage over calves whose hair isn't as trained.

  I hate the idea of making someone slick their calf up here in the midwest. I can understand it in texas, it's ridiculously hot, and you boys do it a little different than us up here sometimes.  I wouldn't wanna show against the Houston or San Antonio grand champ with or without hair....those calvs are just flat good no matter what.  That being said, if someone wanted me to slick my heifer to make it "fair" for everyone, I'd tell em where to go.  We don't mess around when it comes to heifers, and haired is where it's at for us.
