We have a PB Angus heifer with a pedigree we really like (Dixie Erica lines). However she has stayed very small framed and we are looking to add growth and size so the calves would be worth keeping. The heifer is currently bred to a Simmental bull but we would like to AI her after this calf. For her tiny size she is pretty stout. But realistically if the calves don't grow she probably isn't worth keeping. So what PB Angus bulls should we use? Or should we just forget about getting a decent purebred and go the clubby route? Thanks!

B/R Destination 727-928 (ABS) - will add some frame, but not excessive.  Moderate milk - getting harder and harder to find in the Angus breed, Will add a heck of a lot of marbling and ribeye that you don't get with those Ohlde cattle - and he's barely negative on $EN.  Docility is good.
He isn't pretty, but I'm really liking the 928 daughters here -friendly and LONG.

I would look at Boyd New Day 8005 (would add a nice balance to your cow and is a good maternal sire) or maybe even Conneally Onward.  Also, look at CRA Bextor.  All of these bulls will add some growth and frame while holding on to or increasing maternal qualities.

Consider these bulls for more growth and frame:
HF Tiger 5T: http://hamiltonfarms.ca/our-herdsires/
Peak Dot Bold: http://www.peakdotranch.com/herdsires.htm#
MOHNEN DYNAMIITE 1356: http://genex.crinet.com/beef/index.php?action=DETAIL&code=1AN01135&lang=EN
Here is something different but right:
Netherton Mr Brazilain E377:http://www.altacustom.com/SireDirectory/BreedFolders/ANBlackAngus/00AN1148.pdf
Mark H in my experience i would not rate HF Tiger as adding frame his full brother El tigre yes but tiger no
Hyline Rightway 781 a bull I have had a lot of success with frame, milk and temperment.

Sitz Upward or any of his sons will do the trick.  They seem to make really nice females, especially when crossed with a smaller framed bloodlines.  He'll add milk, performance and docility.  All usefule traits in my book.

I also wouldn't suggest HF Tifer to add frame.  His calves tend to be very moderate.

Aussie,

The bulls I suggested are a way to gauge what  the guy might find acceptable.  My favorite larger frame angus line is the Youngdale Mnarch Line. These are big muscled up cattle.  Definately not heifer bulls but they will put frame, growth and muscle into them Check out Young Dale Monarch 12E: http://www.bylivestock.com/youngdaleangus/sire.htm

I would try tc grid topper or vermilion dateline these two bulls will add size and power. Tc grid topper makes good females and males and his daughters have beautiful udders. SitZ upwards here seem to get tall but lack power and are narrow. Hf tiger makes good females but they are a little short bodied and his bulls are all over the board. This is just what I have seen fr my use of these bulls.

Why do you need all this frame ,to me that is just  a sign of problems in the future ,in our past when trying this it sure wasn't what I needed ....An old vet told once 'IF
you breed for dairy cattle you will have dairy cattle problem's ....As far as IMO that is what your getting when you start using these type ,never thought I'd see the day that some of these Angus are considered  TERMINAL cattle ..

Freddy,

In my experience adding extreme muscle causes more functional problems than frame.  To see how far you can take things look at Oakchurch Dictator: http://www.genusbreeding.co.uk/?p=2948.  In the UK Angus breeders had to come up with bulls like this just to survive  the Belgain Blue onslought there.

We don't like our cattle to be too big frame wise but right now as a two year old she is 42" at the hip (frame score of a 1). That qualifies her as a miniature and that is way too small for what we need her to do. We raise full sized moderate cattle not minis. If her calves grow well and are more correctly sized then we don't have a problem with her size.
