What bulls are safe for first calf clubby heifers? No Worries, Jesse James? Also, thought about using a new Angus bull called, Slider.

Just had a 62lb. Jesse James heifer out of a half blood simmi heifer I purchased in January.  I have heard many good things about him for calving ease.  This is my first experience with him but I am pleased.  This heifer showed no visible signs of labor at 9:30.  When I checked her at 11:30 the calf was on the ground trying to stand and just a few minutes after that it was nursing.

I've been really impressed by the No Worries calves I have seen, but haven't used him personally...yet.

I just had Jesse James and SAV Brilliance calves born out of first calf heifers. Both weighed about 70 pounds and came unassisted and looking good! Good structure, good attitude, and awesome growth rates. Very pleased and probably going to use the rest of my Jesse James semen on more heifers this year

Just had a calf out of The Answer. Nice calf 60 lb. up and sucking in 30 minutes. I am using Connealy confidence this year. I highly recommend either. They will come early especially out of The Answer.

I also like the results of Jesse James low birth weights and good looking calves. Another bull that has always worked for us is Majors Money Man. Good luck!

Here is a picture of a 65 lb heifer calf sired by Moto Moto out of an I-80 2 yr old heifer.

Moto Moto pictured as a 3 yr old.  His calves start out small, then get wide.

My vote of those would be Slider. I know the guy who raised him and they have a good program. They also bred the Calgary stampede grand champion steer about 2 years ago. I like the bull a lot and we will very likely be using him on our heifers. Competitive Edge Genetics carries him.

Looked at him and I really like what I see, has anyone seen any calves out of him yet? I know he is young so there most likely isn't many.

I will contact the owner tomorrow and see what they have on the ground. I would bet he has a handful already.

HAB - I believe you've sold me on Moto Moto. Heifer calf in pic looks pretty special. Hope you keep us updated on her progress.

Thanks for the interest in Slider.  Slider is a very uniquely bred bull with a proven Angus pedigree.  He is a son of Northern Improvement out of a Duff New Edition Dam.  His Grand Dam is an EXAR Lutton daughter giving Slider a second shot of Northern Improvement.  I would think his daughters will make some tremendous females.

Slider is a -.3 birth weight EPD bull with a CED of +10.

We have calved out 6 heifers to Slider and all the calves have been in the 60 lb range.  It is hard to say exactly how many Slider calves will be born this spring but he was very well received as a yearling when semen became available in May.  All of the calving reports that I have heard have been very positive on his ability to sire quality calves that were born easily.  The interest in Slider as a new sire has been tremendous.  Hope this information helps and you can PM me if I can answer any other questions you may have.

We have been impressed with our Jesse James calves, decent bone for a heifer bull, good thickness, excellent hair, moderated some, just worked well.  We have not been impressed with I-67.  Didn't have one that we didn't have to pull, from 90-120 pounds.

Thanks so much for the reply, looking forward to giving him a try.

Yes, Jesse James.  Can't say enough good about him.  Used him on a winning Heat Wave x Meyer show heifer.  Used him on a PB Angus Heifer.  Both gave me 72-75 lb. calves that were hardy and good doing.  Both became winning show heifers.  Both were thick, correct, smooth shouldered and clean fronted.  Hair, even here in Texas.  And excellent dispositions.  Wont just say it, I'll show you.  Not some doctored up pictures.  These are pictures of the two heifers turned out in the lot.  Yeah, and look at my profile pic, too.

We have also been very happy with Jesse, we have used him heavily over the past two years and have only touched a few calves neither of which was very big. The only one we pulled this year was 3 days over due and I think the heifer could have had it easy she just played out with the bad weather we were having at the time. Also some of the best looking cattle I have seen out of a heifer bull.

Had 60# Detour (red Angus ) hfr calf this morning out of a pb chopper first calf hfr. This calf had more vigor than any new born calf I've ever seen. She was up and nursing 10 minutes after birth. She is made right too. I will definitely be using him more.

We've considered Jesse James on first calf heifers, but had one this morning out of a mature cow that weighed 108#. Also, had a friend lose a 95# calf out of a first calf heifer. I've heard a lot of success stories though. When you get into these clubby bred cattle, it's all in how the mating matches up. I think we might give "SLIDER" a try this year!
