whats a basic cheap feed?

I have a buddy steer that I will show but he doesn't need that good stuff just wanna get him fat what's kinda the basic ingredients I need?

With corn over $5, nothing is going to be real cheap. 

The best way to save money on feed costs is to...

A) use some real easy keeping genetics that can finish & grade choice on grass alone.
B) use smaller animals who wont require as much total feed.
C) feed more hay.
D) all of the above. 

The next best way to save $$ is to incorparate by-product feeds such as Soy Hulls, Corn Gluten Feed, Hominy Feed, etc. 

Another method that is probably more effective (sometimes it's cheaper too)... we've fattened lots of steers on corn, protien supplement & good grass hay.  More hay & less corn= grower ration.  Less hay & more corn = finisher ration.

We are having it mixed and bagged until we can find a storage tank to order it a ton at a time. Will the Vitaferm mineral work for the mineral? Thanks for the recipe!

Are you sure that you have the price right? The price of corn here is $5.20/bu. A ton of cracked corn with nothing for doing it runs $185.70/ton.

What about a grower

This Ration was formulated for our Show Heifers.  We were showing bigger framed calves than the average now, but I still believe it to be about right for how those heifers have to be conditioned today.  If you're feeding puds, just increase the Oats 10%.  Example: If you are feeding 10 pounds, mix in a pound of oats with nine of this ration.

Every Feed/Tack room should have a Postal Scale.

Opps! Had to wait till I got home to verify; my quote was $259/ton for the ration AAOK uses (that was quoted on 10/28). That is bagged. Anyone know where I can get a good feed storage bin so I can get it in bulk and save some expense there?

AAOK - the ration you sent me said steamed rolled oats, which are more expensive than whole oats. Can either be used? I was quoted my ration with the steamed rolled oats, might be cheaper if I can use the whole oats, just more waist?

If you are in an area that has commercial chicken houses or hog houses that'd be a good place to start. They replace those bins on a pretty consistent basis. If you are getting a new one, I'd look at a Prairie Pride bin, these are made of poly and from my experience they do better with feed in the summer during high temps. They are definitely worth the money IMHO.

In my area of northern Iowa there are many used bins available as most pork producers have quit.  Look on craigs list.

That ration would've run $231.30 using crimped corn, crimped oats, and substituting cotton seed meal for soybean meal on 11/17 at our co-op in SW Oklahoma.  That's picked up at the mill, in bulk (we use an old pickup bed trailer - an 8' one will easily hold a ton, add 6" wooden side boards and you can get another 1000#). Our ration's a little different, but it uses all those ingredients so I have the cost of them on my ticket. And yes, I added in the cost of crimping and mixing.
